Front end knock - bay kombi

Bit stumped here.
When I turn left there's a reasonably sharp knock in the front end. The front ends in pretty good nick. I've jacked it up and the wheels aren't knocking or rubbing. My instincts say ball joint but they seem ok - any ideas ? It does not do it turning right or driving straight.
Cheers Paul

Did you do the usual check with the wheels off the ground and rock them with hands at 3 & 9 then 6 & 12? These let you know which joint is playing up.

Also, on the outside chance check all the wheel bolts are tight.

Yeah I checked them all but the more I think about the more I am convinced it's the BJs - back to the shed again tomorrow night.

you know how to correctly check your ball joints, hands on wheels at 12 and 6 Oclock won't do it

More info req'd to help, is it a once only clunk or rythmical as in with the rotation of the wheel, or steering dampner bush (unlikely)

It's rhythmical Matt but it clunks . Nothing straight or turning right. Bloke on DSK suggests bottom left ball joint.

Which side does it sound like its coming from? If rythmical and varies with speed and comes from the rh side its a colapsed wheel brg.....my call at this stage

Ball joints will clunk on bumps, so may tie rod ends if really nackered, should be replaced way before that bad

Wjth the vehicle jacked up and on stands, check the upper ball joints and tie rod ends by squeezing/compressing with large multi-grips, check the lower b/j's bu levering arm upwards with a large screwdriver. Any more than 2-3mm movement on the b'j's and the can make a noise. Any movement and they are worn

kombi uses beam with torsion bars right?

I wonder if it could be a loose or flogged anchor screw allowing the control arm to move?

had this happen to my SB years ago and the whole upper arm came out completely when I turned a corner when the screw dropped out.

Torsion bar rubbers, sounds a lot like a problem I had with a Peugeot many years ago
