Refilling leaky TRW Steering Box 1968 Type1
My steering box is leaking. When it was new I was advised to remove the oil and replace with Penrite steering box oil, however now Penrite only seem
to make a self levelling grease. Is it ok to remove the top of the box to check and top up? I know there are plastic plugs there but reckon if I
remove them they are likely to break or fall in to the box and I will have difficulty replacing them with new ones

Um, it's either 59 or 60 onwards that used grease instead of oil right? May have been 65 but either way yours should be grease.
Before you take apart and fill with grease you may as well find new seals for it too. I did it a few years back by searching the net for seal
suppliers and browsing the catalogue till if found the right dimensions. Nitrile rubber is a good choice for seal material these days

as has been said above, I used penrite self levelling grease in mine, took all the seals to my local seal & bearing shop & was easily able to
get replacements. I had some cardboard gasket material that I cut a new gasket from for the top cover. Cant quite remember what I did for the little
plugs on top though, I'll have to stick my head under the front & have a look.
