Interesting Paint Colour Question

Ive always wondered about the colour sticker on our orange type 3 saying Kalahari Tan when the colour is far from anywhere near Tan. We now think the colour sticker may have been mistakenly put on our car….but in lieu of which correct colour? In the US this is Clementine Orange…anyone know what it was called in Australia?

Hi

I believe that is the correct colour sticker and Volkswagen Australasia didn't have any Real Orange colors that I can remember..
I believe We had different paint colours to any other country..
so German or USA paint colours would be different.. to Aussie painted cars..

Does that mean Lee that the sticker was added to a German import for the sake of it, but in actual fact the sticker is for another colour in the Australian colour range, but this orange is not that colour? It just doesn't make sense that a sunburnt orange could be called Tan? This is the original colour orange of the car as
imported from Germany.

Kalahari Tan was a colour shared with Datsun of the same era. Datsun and VW's were coming out of the same building in Clayton in the 1970's.
Kalahari Tan was a burnt orange colour. The sticker is correct for your car.

I know this is an old thread but I have a 1970 orange squareback and the colour is Clementine. I also see the colour code is slightly different to Kalahari tan so they obviously painted both colours in Oz

Clementine was a darker fuller colour quite different to Kalahari Tan. Clementine originated in Europe as a special enhanced safety colour on the VW safety vehicle program. Look it up.
