I'm helping out a cousin in Hervey Bay,Qld.
His daughter is celebrating her Formal and she needs a great looking ride to arrive in style.

Not simply enough I'm afraid. Needs to be a licensed accredited limousine service to do this. The only way you can legally do it otherwise is if you
own the car yourself and drive for someone in your immediate family. You might find someone who is licenced up there if you look around.

Thanks for input but I don't think we need to complicate things. It's a simple request, i'm sure there are genuine VW owners out there willing to
share the love of their iconic vehicles.

Probably unlikely given the fines they face from the department of fair trading and transport department who licence limo drivers. They often do spot
checks at known events like formals. I don't even think they are allowed to offer you the car for free.

It may be different here in Tasmania, but the the catch is MRI insurance IF you charge or receive any monetary reward, you need t be a licensed
business for that purpose.
If you provide the service free of charge you should legally be able to do it.
It's simply giving someone a lift down the road. "Sorry officer, I was driving along and saw this person hitchhiking."

Unfotunately he is probably right.  The days of being able to help
someone out, and have a bit of fun at the same time, seem long gone.
Thanks to the Fun Police, lawyers, and many other organisation who are just waiting for anyone to make a mistake, it can be very expensive if you do.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

For what it's worth I've given you the answer.
Providing you are not using the motor vehicle in a commercial sense i.e for reward or hire, you can use your private vehicle for this function.
The NSW police and transport inspectors have been clamping down on the Apps which knowingly encourage people to share a ride for reward or gain.
The second you except and money, gift or reward, your a gonna.
It's not a road rule but comes under the Motor Transport Act.

Sadly the department doesn't see it this way.
We asked a friend with a vintage jag if they were willing to provide transport for a family wedding recently. They are in a car club and as good
family friends offered to do this for us at no cost, not even for petrol, as they were guests at the wedding and going anyway. They looked into it and
were told they were not allowed to do it under any circumstances. Not even for free. Otherwise what's to stop everyone saying that it was for free
and taking cash in hand. Hence no licence and accreditation equals no dice. And the cost of the licence and insurance, annual pit inspection of the
car etc etc is the reason why the limo guys charge so much.
It's like anything else. Robbing a bank is all very well.....until you get caught. Yes sure, someone can offer to do it, and maybe they will get away
with it. But maybe they won't. If you are the sort of person who thinks doing 20km over the speed limit is fine because you probably will get away
with it, then you probably wouldn't be worried about risking taking someone to a formal.
I'm not trying to be anti fun. There are plenty of licenced operators around that people can use so why risk it with a she'll be right approach.
That's my 2c worth.

Yep that is the way it is these days, can't talk for QLD but in NSW you need a
Passenger service Licence for all your drivers, your vehicle must be accredited,
extra third party insurance for the vehicle and insurance for the passengers
outside the vehicle. I have a tour/transport business doing exactly this I
reckon it costs around $80.00 per week before you turn the key! Every month
the (ex RTA) now M&RA send me notices re safety and many other things.
I have to have yearly medicals and 6 monthly audits among other things!
I am not saying I agree with the regulations but in the unlikely event of an
accident you will be pleased you have it all in place!
Why should an operator adhere to all the rules when others don't and due to
the costs they don't have can then under-cut those who do the right thing?
Yes we are over-regulated, perhaps over licenced and perhaps over insured,
why is this so, ask those who make the rules, they will probably give you some more!
The similar situation applies to builders, mechanics, boat operators or even
pilots, would you pay someone who wasn't licenced and insured and expect
them to get it right?

Yes but the problem is.....no licence, no accreditation = no legal rego = no insurance, no ctp, no public liability etc etc. so in the event that you
do have an accident or incident you are gone.
How would you feel getting "a mate" to drive your wedding car, being involved in an accident where, say for example, you are left paralysed and
unable to work for the rest of your life then finding you are not entitled to any compo, any legal rights, any disability support etc and the only
option is to privately sue the car owner who you are fully aware is not licenced and probably has nowhere near the cash to look after you for life.
And as seen above the department does follow up and check these, they have been known to go through photos of events, weddings etc posted online and
run the regos on the cars to see if they are legit, they also regularly pose as customers in an attempt to catch unlicensed operators out. They do
fine and they do charge people.
Do I think it's over the top? Probably is. But as DubbyFan says, if the dodgy people get away with it, why should the legit guys pay thousands a year
to do it right.
