Weird End play?
Hi All
Just thought I'd adjust the end play on my new motor after being run for a couple of months. Measured it at about 41thou without shims. Okay put in 3
shims 37thou thick, put flywheel on without seal. All measured spot on. Flywheel off, seal fitted, no endplay?? Fitted seal further in and still the
same. No problems prior just too much play. What gives? I have noticed two of my seals look slightly different. One the inner lip sits slightly in
from edge more than the other.
BTW Using Elring seals and the same CroMo F/W.

You just need to tap the seal in a bit further I had the same problem you would be surprised at the difference between brands of seals I just fitted
one never re checked the end play
Then when a oil leak started at the rear main I noticed there was no end play pulled the motor and found the seal was cooked due to rubbing on the fly
wheel
As was not tapped in far enough the radius on the fly wheel was touching the inner lip of the seal

Yea, peps think the seal sits flush with the casing face but actually the seal needs to bottom out on the cases seal recess.

Yep tried with the seal pushed right in. Went to a bearing supply today and found a seal 2mm narrower IE: 70x90x8. Has anyone tried one of these?

It is a good idea to install the seal using a seal installation tool the is pulled using the gland nut, does not damage the seal and keeps it square,
depth will depend on raduis on the flywheel and other machining variables, i have fitted quite a few seals flush with the case without an issue.

So you aren't using a std flywheel by the CroMo mention?
Do you have a std one to compared to as VW60 could be onto something here as if the flywheel spigot isn't tall enough of radiused like the std one
then this could well be the issue.

Yes I have a standard F/W to check against. This is the thing, the CroMoly one has been run before without any issues. Seems like there is an updated
style seal around from Elring?? I'm going to do some measuring between F/W's and I'd say get the CroMo one machined.........

The sealing lip has enough flexibility to allow slight machining tolerances between flywheels, I always polish the radius on the flywheel, oil the
seal, Permatex Aviation on seal/case edge, could your problem be too much grease between the shims?
