This engine went to Sydney where after a few dollars, it now looks like this with new heads, pistons and barrels, heater boxes etc.

Now just spent the day sorting and cleaning this pile of metal.
Tinware to be painted.
Then assembled on the block.
Will connect to an autobox and start the conversion from a manual single cab to an auto.

Front floor had been painted in tar. What a bugger of a job to get that crap off. Really pointless going ahead not knowing what it was hiding. Petrol, wire brush, scraper and rags and a few hours did the job. I was far too dirty to even photograph the mess.
I welded up a patch and will paint it all blue again, no tar, which should be banned from car repairs, I think.
Clutch pedal, clutch cable and gear stick now removed for good.
I am yet to work out what is needed to do to fit the Auto shift.

All repairs now done and have just put a coat of etch primer all over it.
Will rub that back this week and give it a coat of 2 pac primer next.

I now have the whole ute in 2 pac primer after countless hours of sanding and chasing small marks.
Pressure pack black has been lightly sprayed all over and the wet and dry rub down will start in a few days.

Yes, thanks for the feedback, always great to have progress on a project.
It makes the process more enjoyable for me.
I always like original colours.
This was and will be Niagra Blue.
But, thinking about a white roof and pillars for that two tone look.
There was a Pastel White in that year that I would use.

I take it you like original Volkswagen colours but niagra blue isn't an original Australian colour for a 72 kombi

Colour

Oh,............. then I may have identified the wrong original colour.
It certainly look close to Niagra Blue and now I have bought the paint.
I should have consulted the 'brains trust' earlier but thought that I had it right.
Oh well, it looks like that it will be an original VW colour, just not the original VW colour, but pretty close to it.
What colour is close that it may have been?

Rub down is underway today with 400 wet and dry.
May be able to start painting door jambs tomorrow.

Beautiful weather so started the painting, all in 2 pac.
The colour is so close to the original under the hoodlining that I am wondering how 2 different colours, if they are different, could be that close.

Used the remaining paint in the gun for a light coat on the tray because once the hardener is in the paint, it can't be saved.
The tray will get another full coat.

Thanks for the comments, I'm enjoying the journey.
Hoping to paint the roof today. I have 2 heaters going in the shed right now trying to raise the temperature from about 15 to about 20 degrees.
2 pac paint doesn't like cooler temps when going on.

Ok, got the temp up to 18-20 degrees, so away we go with the top half colour which is Pastel White, a VW colour from that year.

Doors as well getting the top half treatment.
Lots of extra masking doing the two colours so I hope the result is worth it, meaning that I hope the colour combination works.

So, whilst waiting for the paint to dry and i get bored easily, decided to start on the instrument cluster tidy up.
Cleaned up the original cluster, painted the silver metal part that holds the glass in, changed the speedo over to a kilometre one with a trip meter from a left hooker, added a clock from a 77 microbus and added some chrome rings that I found online.

End result, a better looking instrument cluster.
Oh, and I gave the odometer a haircut back to 000000, as it was a speedo from overseas and I have no idea what mileage the ute really has and the engine and gearbox are from different other vehicles.

This is the result of today's effort. The white looks quite yellowish in the pics but i think that is from the flouros above.
Hoping to get the blue on next week.

End result looks good, off with the masking tomorrow and let the paint cure for a while.
Missus and I off to Europe for a month later this week so no updates for a while and glad to have the paint hardening whilst we are away.
Looking forward to the assembly, hoping to have rego on it by Christmas.
