Jets for empi epc 34, s ?


Can anybody tell me where to source jets for empi epc 34, s? I have been told that the mains and idles are the same as Weber ipc,s and other Webers??

I am after some 52, s or 50 idles and maybe some mains.

I just did a yellow pages search for weber carburettor and came back with multiple hits in Brisbane so one of them should be able to order weber jets for you.

As for sizing, what size engine is it for? 52 is probably as small you you want to go for a 1300 but then I'm going off of knowledge from when I used to tune my Weber 34 ICT's.

Yeah, finding purveyors of Weber jets is not a problem. As you say, a quick google will find heaps of therm. Its just that some of my mates locally have heaps of them and until this morning I was too lazy to pull them out and have a closer look. Turns out Ive got 55 idles, with fair bit of black smoke on acceleration (hard) Now for the best bit! They supplied 150 mains! So I intend to regulate the fuel pressure first and then stick the exhaust gas anaylser on it and see what that did, and then maybe drop the main jet size if the readings wazrrant it. Just for info the engine is a 1776 with a stock cam and bigger valves, so its not that much bigger than a stocker really. Itys not a fast car but shit its got some grunt down low. All the roundabouts near my place are either third or fourth gear. Pull out the other side nice and smooth.

Cool. For a 1600 it'd normally be 55 idle, 135 mains, 160 air and F6 emulsion. The emulsion is the most important as that's what dictates the finer points of AFR thru the rev range but you have to get in the ball park with the jets first :)

Being a 1776 I'd suggest a 140 mains first. Getting a wideband AFR fitted to the exhaust along with the use of a tacho will really help with self tuning the engine :D

They are the same carbs. I got mine from Rod Penrose. Mine were for a 1776 twin port, stock cam, bandido heads (slightly bigger valves) running heaters, Magnaspark ignition and a stock exhaust. So you can see its pretty much a stocker. I did have a PICT34 on it and it was nice at cruise but doughey as hell in town.

These carbs bolted on nicely, I fired them up and they run (according to my AFR) right on at idle, and rich on the main jet. It puffed black smoke on acceleration but a fuel pressure regulator stopped that instantly.

The literature indicated that the carbs would come with 55 idles, 130 mains and 160 airs. Mine came with 55 idles, 150 mains and 175 airs.

On the road it performs pretty much as it should now with reasonable acceleration, good throttle response at cruise and around town.

I dont think that you will find any carbs which will run spot on out of the box but these are bloody close I have to say. After driving it a bit today I suspect am still half a jet size too big at idle and a full jet size at least too big on the main. So I will take Landfalls advice and grab some jets from the guy in Victoria and see where it takes me.

These carbs are not high quality stuff like my genuine Dells. But they cost half of what my Dells cost. They fitted up pretty much straight on, and the carbs themselves arent too bad. The linkages are a bit tinny, but I will machine myself up some little mods and all will be well. I dont think I have seen better value for money carbs (for a stocker) around at this stage. I drive my car maybe once a month (maybe) and that just doesnt justify me spending half the cost of the engine just on carbs. I am really happy with mine so far (done about 30k's) so watch this space.

Don't drop the idle and main at the same time as you could end up with the engine bogging as the carb transfers from the idle to main circuits. I'd drop the main to 140 first and see how that goes. I wouldn't say you'll need to go below 52 on the idle but every engine is unique :)

Thanks for the info guys!

I ordered a set yesterday, will see what jets I get in the box, then drive and see....

My engine is in a beetle, 1641 stock SP heads, cam etc, J pipes and extractors (noisey!) Pertronix vacuum dissy and coil on its was as well.
Any suggestions on ideal jets to get me close for the above ??

When ordering jets do I just get ones for the Webber ICT? Any tips on how to judge weather I get bigger or smaller and 2 up 1 down etc? Can't afford to buy bulk at the moment!

I already have Vac gauges I use on bikes, (the twin dial type with hoses attatched), can I plug these into these carbs somewhere, or do I need the snail type as well?

Without knowing the Empi item I can't say for definate that the jets are the same but in saying that most jets are pretty similar between carb brands.

Now it's going back a good while but from memory the ICT used a jet stack with the air screwing into the carb body and then the emulsion tube a snug press fit into the bottom of the air and the main a push fit into the bottom of the emulsion tube so unlike a solex PICT the main isn't a threaded jet like the air corrector.

I hope that's of some help to you.

Jetting wise the baseline for a 1600 is 55 idle, 130 mains, 160 air and F6 emulsion from memory. I know that's right for the jets but the emulsion could a F78 or 9 out the box. Like I said it's been a while.

I'd be tempted to start from here myself as it's more familiar cos the main effects things quicker than the air but I still think a 140 main with the 175 air will get you closer as even for a 1641 many people find they need a 135 main and even a 140 for a bus to help cool the engine.

I've got these fitted to my 1600 sp in my DC kombi after fiddling with jets I ended up with the stock mains 130 and 62idle jets it came with 52 idles but popped through the carbs a lot when cold and surged went to 57 idles and was better but 62 idles fixed it I've of a 2lt box behind this and get 10 liters per hundred out the road and done over 20,000kms like this with no problems also fitted electronic igntion with vaccum advance

Er, one more thing for my new vac dissy, shall I run one vac line or T both carbs??

Er, also will the vac gauges I already have be ok? They are two dials with vac hoses connected (for motorcycles) these ones....

I forgot to say that the smaller carbs aren't normally drilled for the use of manometers unlike larger carbs like DCOE, IDF etc so you'll need a snail tail type of flow meter to balance them. Oh, and did you say you have the manifolds drilled for a balance pipe?

As for vac signal, I'd try just the one first as the vac signal is greater on twin carbs than a single but if she doesn't run well then when you plumb the seond carb in you'll need an anti-pulse valve from the t-piece to dizzy.

The carbs are still en route from CVD.....

Do I need to drill the manifolds and install a balance pipe, if so what diameter is best, and do I just use rubber vac type hose, or ridgid with flexi at each end?

As far as I know the EPC carbs don't come with the balance setup and need it added

There were some discussions earlier about this

If you purchased the complete kit from CBPerformance, the tails and hose is supplied for the balance pipe. The manifolds are already drilled.

You may find the emulsion tube is F78 which according to my research works but gives a slight hesitation like a 009 distributor. Change it for an F6,

1/2 inch ID pipe is fine. If not in the kit then couple of barbs and your choice of tubing. I've seen some make a solid pipe to fit round the back of the fan housing with bends so only a short length of rubber pipe is needed to finish it off. Really depends on how you want it to look and the time you wish to expend on it :)

I got my kit from CVD for the sp1600 and it came with the balance tube all barbs and the manifolds were tapped ready to go
