split screen beetle price.
Any idea on what is a good price for an original split screen beetle.
I know its hard to give a price without seeing but I have a chance to buy a barn find one that been stored for 35 years and I also haven't seen it
and owner wont let me unless the price is right or he'll just leave collecting dust.
I don't know the year or even the colour but have been told it was driving perfectly when stored.

I was involved with the purchase of a '51 beetle a few years ago. Reasonably solid but ratty-looking driver at US$8k. It was a price that made
sense and it was a fantastic basis for restoration. I'd expect to pay $10-15k here for one that is complete with the right bits in similar
condition.

Even if it did drive perfectly it doesnt mean much after 35 years in storage as everything mechanical will have be gone over,
engine would certainly need a tear down and reseal at a minimum if its not siezed from lack of use, brake hoses, all rubber parts etc etc.

35 years less wear and tear on the car, 35 years less rust accumulating in the body, 35 years less people driving it around. Give me a barn find with
35 years of storage any day over something that's been used for 35 more years. Prefer to have to tear down & reseal than do rust and accident
repair.

Missing the point Dave....
Its not about how much work the car needs, its that some deluded sellers think yeah mate it drove fine 35 years ago, a new battery and some fuel and
off down the road to get a blue slip you go.

I'm with Joel on this one. I see bikes at work that have been sitting for a couple of years and the cost of the initial barn find is generally the
least of the problems... Let alone 35! Sitting around does no mechanical object any favours. Especially when they aren't getting easy to get bits
for. Any clues on how it was stored? Oiled up cylinders or anything like that?
It will all be OK in the end, if it's not OK it's not the end!

Buy it Alan, I'm sure the owner is testing you and knows roughly what they are worth. But then again, you can't put a price sight unseen. I guess

Last one I heard of selling went for 20k. More people want them than are for sale so they are never going to be cheap.
I have found two reasonably close to me but neither are for sale, nor will they be for a long time.
I would get what cash you are prepared to pay together and go visit ....

I was thinking that I'd offer him $10,000 with conditions attached, but he hasnt come back to me. As someone said he may be aware of the value and
getting other bids. Once I have some photos I'll post, even if I dont buy it someone else may get a chance. Dont know anything about how it was
stored only that its been collecting dust.
