Im looking at buying a 89 T3 auto, and am wondering if there are any problems that i should be looking for? and if the auto T3 is any good compared to

The auto is stronger than the manual. Very reliable gearbox.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Check for any water leaks /cooling system. Around the head to block rubber seal and the top head stud sealing nuts. ANY leaking can be big $$$
And , same, ie. auto is strong, should behave 'normally', change smoothly etc.

I have owned several T3 autos and enjoy them.
Great to drive. Heavier on petrol, but worth it in my opinion
Main trouble I have had with the auto is being "sluggish" to change into 3rd when cold.
This was fixed with a screen clean and new fluid

I have heard the T3 auto has a common problem where the inner seal leaks into the diff causing eventual failure.
Otherwise they are just thirstier on fuel and according to a mate that's had both, the manual pulls loads better on hills.
