Factory Beetle Cabriolet ADR

In light of the new Club Rego rules would a America LHD 1972 Cabriolet require rear lap sash seat belts? They come with those sash retractable ones? Also rear childs seat anchorage points? I believe for a sedan yes but wonder where the convertible stands?

I don't know what state ( I'm in NSW) you are in and my vert ('76) is fully road registered, not on club rego, but it has only lap belts ( retractable) in the rear, HOWEVER, I believe I have found what appears to be anchor points behind the rear seat to take the sash part of a lap sash belt. I've never checked to see if they ever came out with lap sash or if I would need engineers cert if I installed them so all this waffle is probably of no use to you. Make of it what you will.

Also not sure what state you are in but here in Qld, I put lap/sash belts in the rear of my 72 cabrio but they were a pain when it comes to lowering the seat back so my engineer said they only need to be lap belts. We ended up putting just the lap ones in but you can do either up here in the later models. Mine was also a LHD (but not anymore) so your car will have the anchor points too. There were no child restraints though and you don't need them for rego. If you want them you will have to have them engineered but they can be done.

Hey Yogie, what was the problem with lowering the seat back, not sure what you mean by that, it would be good to know as I'm still considering installing them.

i am in Victoria and it seems that car need to comply with the AD of the time. I just had a feeling convertibles only needed lap belts in the back and unsure of child restraint thing.
I also have two other american cars to be club rego one 78 one 79 and they need the amber indicators rear seat belts and child restraints. Its a real pain.
The 72 cabriolet i am considering buying....

Child restraints were not available in '72. I think that they came out around '76?

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Hi Donn,
I just didn't like the look of it as the sash part was really obvious when the seat was down and you have to sort of tuck the seat belt around the side of the seat. We figure that we will hardly ever have anyone in the back so the lap belts would be fine. There was no technical reason though so if you want more protection for back seat passengers, the decision may well be different for you.

Likewise the child seat comments from others. They are not needed because they were not available at the time but, if you want them, you can have them added and engineered the same time as your seat belts and the RHD conversion as it saves money to get them done all at once.

Imported cars need to match the ADRs of the time. Cars manufactured from Jan 1971 need lap sash belts except for the centre bench seats.

What are the requirements for the rear seat, my '76 has lap only in the rear though it was an import probably 20 years ago

my understanding in victoria it applies only to new registration application. that is for Club and i suppose its always been of recent for full rego. I went off the car i had in mind to import due to possible rust
