What year is my type 3? Confirmed 1964

Hi all,

I have had conflicting opinions about whether my squareback is a 63 or 64.
It has indented vents under the front windscreen, no pressing for the no plate to attach above the front bumper, 2 circular horn grills behind the front bumper and the horn mounted inside the front hood, and salt and pepper interior.
The chassis no. on the manufacturers plate is 0385501 and the no. stamped under the back seat is 385501.
If anyone can confirm whether it is a 63 or 64 it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Dave

I have to agree with Empi. Definitely looks like a 66.

OK thanks for that, must be a 66 then. And no it doesn't have a push button dash.
Other things that threw me were the large seat belt threaded holes and the seat belt mounting hole for the shoulder is a lot lower on the pillar than a 65 model.
I have owned a 65 and a 67 and neither had the same horn grill, must be a 66 only thing then? See pic below:

There is no number stamped after the 36 on the manufacturers plate, the only numbers stamped are 385501 after the "Fahrgecl. Nr."

A member has given me this link:
http://www.clubvw.org.au/vwchassis  and when you scroll down to the type3 section it confirms that the chassis no. indicates that it is a 1964 model.

Thankyou to those that have helped.

Cheers Dave

It didn't have an engine when I bought it. I have since installed a twin carby engine from a later model.

When I looked at them in Bathurst they were full of parts, so I couldn't get the chassis numbers. (there was 2). I looked at the wheels and speedo which were dated 64 and 65. You should still have the date on the back of your speedo. Looks like the wheels are long gone though. Both cars had a fair bit of rust under the rear wheel arches. Has that been repaired on yours?

66s don't have recessed vents or horn grilles cut out of the front valance. And not all 64s had push button dashes either so that's no way to tell for sure. Anyway glad you got some useful information.
