Finally decided after a year that the Notch know by its owner as Frankie deserves its own thread...

So a purchase over the phone and a moth later a flight to Qld to stay with Becs folks and pic up the little green machine...
Back to the caravan park where a quick hook up to Becs folks van was deamed necessary.... well it looks good at least

Second day with the Notch around the Sunshine Coast, stopped at some shops. Went to start it and nothing, checked the shifter mechanism neutral switch
(yes its an auto!), no joy. Checked battery terminals. Tried all the wires in the engine bay, nope. Called out RACQ, because of being on a busy road
hadn't been game to get right underneath with feet out in the traffic hadn't got as far as the starter motor. Poor bugger, he checked the battery
but then seemed to be completely lost on such an old car. I crawled underneath and surprise surprise, loose connections on the starter motor. RACQ guy
hands me the spanner, I tighten, he starts it. Reckons it's his easiest repair all week!
Couple of days running around and we head off on the 2000km + trip home!
Learned one thing before we left, make sure the missus has her handbag where the spare key is before you lock the key in the car! RACQ take 2!

Left the Sunny Coast for the trip home. Via Caboolture where we had picked it up from, Kilcoy and round the windy road passed Lake Somerset and out to
Esk. Now theres a test run for a not really powerful and slightly vague steering car. Everywhere we stopped people would either ask what was it or
comment on how they or their dad, uncle etc used to have one!
Up the hill from Esk to Hampton We sat up the arse of a new model Range Rover! Even passed it going up hill! Should have seen the look on the blokes
Dial! Priceless!
Through Toowoomba and down through Leyburn to Inglewood. If it hadn't been getting late in the day and the cook being a bit tired and emotional after
saying bye to here folks earlier in the day I would have done a lap around the track layout in Leyburn. Mildly and sensibly of course!
Stayed at the Pub in Inglewood or the night.
Woke up next morning to a frosty start! Felt just like home.

Didn't feel like pushing the Notch along with the trucks and traffic down the Newell Highway so we left Inglewood to take the more pleasant back way
via Texas, Yetman, Coolatai, Warialda, Bingara, Barraba and Manilla to Gunnedah. A much less stressfull way to travel. West to Coonabarabran then on
to Gilgandra for the night. Next morning a chilly start to Warren, Nevertire, Nyngan and Cobar. We had bought a 20 litre jerry can to make sure we
would have plenty between cheaper fuel. So far we hadn't used it. Left Cobar mid arvo and headed west at 100 to 110km/h. This little car just kept
happily along. We even passed a couple of caravaners!b Yet again everywhere we stopped people kept commenting on the cute car or how they used to have
one. Even an old preist who was staying at the motel we stopped at in Broken Hill commented on how nice it was to see one on the road and how he had
had a wagon the same.
Finally after som shopping we left the Hill for the last leg to home. Even in daylight we had to dodge goats through the Thackaringa Hills.
With it finally parked in the yard at home we were glad to say it was the best addition to our little VW family. 2000+ km, les than 10l per 100km all
the way home!

Very good score mate. Went thru your town last Saturday on way to Adelaide. Was on a deadline. Didn't realise how close it is to Orroroo.Will be over
again mid December for a week to do some renos on Daughters house. Will talk to you at the Volksfest about coming across to check out your collection.

Will see you there Gary. Hopefully with the Notch running. Got some issues still.
In amongst your Type 3 Automati bits you wouldn't have a spare Shift cable or the end tube that clamps to the Shift arm on the box? Or maybe know
where I could get one.
Mines been bent out of shape and it's a bastard to get straight.
Will add a photo later.

The end of the shift cable where it has been bent when the clamp was tightened. This is after I have straightened it considerably. Still doesn't
slide far enough through to get all of the required movement for 1 and 2 selection.
Also can't get the over tube off to remove it from the car to straighten it further. Can the cable come out from the shifter end?

I have straightened them that bad before.I get it close in a vice,then dolly it on a steel block to finish it,then clean up the hammer dents with a
fine file and emery.I will pull one out of one of my wrecks next week and if it's ok,will bring it down show weekend.You must have something wrong
with the connecter at the shift lever to be causing that.I have seen it before,but can't figure why it happens.All my auto projects have never had
that happen.

Previous owner seems to have been heavy handed on a few things Gary.
I got it that good with an old vice under the car. Might pull it out tonight.
Have you had the rain yet? Weve got thunder and a bit of rain?

Got the Shift cable rod straightened up yesterday. Disconnected it from the shifter and slid it as far out as I could without going through the floor
pan.
The hammer and anvil trick worked nicely. Thanks Gary.
Making up a new connector bolt to mount to the shift arm on the box. The hole in the shift arm of the old box was a couple of mm smaller than the one
on the replacement box, so the connector slopped around and didn't select gears properly. Not sure if this is a common problem, were there different
sizes or could the one I've got have been drilled out for some reason.
Took the carbs apart yesterday. Bit of crap in one needle and seat that would have held it open. Other one wasn't too bad. Will get a couple of
rebuild kits and give them a revamp soon.

Pulled a shifter and cable out today-what a prick of a job.Somebody had welded the tube where the cable enters the pan-it must have broken away at
some stage.The rubber plug had welded itself to the cable and the tube and wouldn't come free.Didn't have my battery cut off saw.Is your cable good
now?If so,I can use this one on the Bus that I am doing the auto and Suby conversion to.Reckon I will use the Type3 shifter as well-I will mount it
alongside the drivers seat.Better than the Bus shifter that's like a Tiger Moth control stick.All the 003 autos I have played with,have all had the
same size connector where the shift cable hooks to the shifter arm.

My shift cable seems to be all good now Gary. Sounds like you've earned the usage of your cable after getting it out. 
The hole in the shifter arm is 15.5mm whereas the one on old box is 13.5mm.
I'm hoping one of our local mechanical blokes can turn up a similar part with the larger diameter today for me. Or I'll have to make one up myself
from a piece of rod.

Well I have learned something today.The cable and sleeve I took from the Type3 had a sleeve that is 12mm diameter,and the holes in the 003 Bus autos
shifter arms I have here are both 15.5mm.Be easy enough to machine up just the outer sleeve with bigger OD

Having another look at yours-it looks like the outer sleeve is already an adaptor to take it to the larger diameter??
