Engine code?

I have an engine with a code that starts with a single letter S, followed by 9 digits beginning with 8. I can't seem to find this in any list of ID codes - can anyone help?

Does it have the VW recycled symbol at the start of the number?

Thats not a factory number, probably a SA police issue number starting with S.

Replacement engines and cases dont come stamped with numbers and so some people did the right thing and got a police issue engine number stamped on.

You can also see that the 'S' is not neatly in line with the numbers. It's been manually added later, as Joel said.
