Information required - 1969 Bathurst Campell/Murphy Notchback

G'day guys

Does anybody have any information on the Notchback that raced in the Hardie-Ferrodo 500 in 1969 driven by Campbell and Murphy? I'm really interested in the specification or any other pictures.

I used to work for Gary Campbell, he owned a VW dealership in Liverpool, you can see the balloon logo on the front of the car, it was called Provincal Motors, dont know anything about the notch, before my time, but Gary was very helpful up and coming racers

Well we have Gary to thank for a VW being eligible for Nc Historic racing. Currently working on the spec sheet for CAMS. Thanks for the info!

From the photo I can see it has 4 stud rims, which means disc brakes on the front, dual circuit master cylinder which were introduced in 1968 on the type 3.
The rear suspension on a 1968 model was 'swing axle', with the double joint CV 'IRS' on the 1969. Again from the photo, it looks like 'IRS' on the rear.
The electrical system would have been 12 volt, the engine a 1600 twin port, with twin carbies.
Hope that helps. Dave

A notch can be seen in one of the videos on U-Tube of Bathurst from 1968 or 9. Don't know if it is this one.

STOP PRESS: Here it is, about 2/3 through this film (if link works). It may appear elsewhere in this, or other films...

cool! I didn't realise anyone had raced a type 3 in Australia in the sixties, only Beetles.

When i was at Noosa Hill Climb I met a guy with a Jag sports sedan who knows Brian Thompson really well and used to race against him in the fasty..... Said he used to shiver every time Brian came past him....

The information below came from wikipedia, which suggests to me the registration plate was a re-issue between 1968 and 1972.

"From 1951, plates were 3 characters and three numbers (as per the Federal scheme): AAA-000 to FZZ-999, issued on a yellow background with black lettering, with "NSW" insert on the top of the plate. From 1968, cancelled numbers in that range were reissued, but this did not last long, so the Department of Motor Transport DMT needed to fill in unissued plates containing I and Q on the 2nd and 3rd letter characters (e.g.: AIA-123, AMQ-123).

By 1972, NSW had reached the limit imposed by the Federal scheme: a new series started at GAA-000 and ran to ZLF-999 in July 2004,having skipped the plates series from IAA-000 to IRZ-000, ITA-000 to IZZ-999 and ZLG-000 to ZZY-999"

Certainly Pre about May 1971. I know that "AQU..." was NSW-issued (on an original car) in May or June 1971 (in Blacktown), and those RE-iissues were befoer the Q and I fill-ins, according to the Wiki-info...
So presumably the car was registered in 1968 or 1969, though it may have been built earlier? Looks like 1968 model to me, but there are some real trype 3 experts around! I'm not sure if the 4 stud exactly aligned with the 4-joint rear introduction?

Yep 4:40 to 5 minutes in the Youtube clip. Not the best of looks for the Type 3.

Off topic, Gary Campbell helped many racers, one was Chris Heyer who used to drive this all conquering Beetle in Rallycross at Catalina Park, even the might HDT car driven by Peter Brook couldn't beat this Beetle

Gary had a passion for flying and started his own small airline and he used often pilot the planes himself, he died in a plane crash in the 70s

Dicko,

Here is a '69 owners manual; should have what you need for a spec sheet.
