ej20t conversion questions
hey guys
does any body have pictures of the rear of their beetle to tell me how the rear bumber reattaches after the metal has been removed from the back of
the car and how much metal is removed, where your intercooler is located is it water/air or still air/air was tossing up the sohc ej22 cause of lack
of cutting but doing all the engineering and still knowing i will seek more power later plus can it work on a swing axle or will it not give enough
slack to be pushed forward to clear the back of the car

Hi
Im mobile at the moment so I cant post any photos, but look at mine and other build threads for ideas on bumper bracket area.
Using a swing axle really limits you as you cant move the motor forward. Bite the bullet now and convert to IRS.

Just be careful using a 76 chassis as your car will become liable for meeting all of the safety requirements for 1976. You may want to check in to
those first to make sure you are not going down the wrong path. You can always weld in the IRS brackets to the current pan if you do not want to
worry about the later regulations.

You could try to find a semi auto chassis or you could do something naughty

76 was the first year of ADR27A, I'm sure a Subaru engine would pass it OK

When I built my car these were the NSW RTA wheels regs at the time, my 73 bug is on a 72 chassis fro obvious reasons. Not sure if they are still the
current regs or if Queensland differs from these

I've got an EJ20T squeezed behind a swing axle so it is possible. I'm going to raise my luggage compartment floor behind the rear seat about 100mm
and fit a kombi engine inspection hatch to allow access to a RS liberty W/A intercooler. This will also provide adequate clearance for the turbo.
But its easier in an irs car as you can flip the banana mount and get more room. Still need to clearance the firewall for the turbo.
I sell IRS conversion Kits and can supply everything you need to convert your swinger.

Hey Ron just wondering why you've stayed with the swing axle?

It wasn't by choice. I was in the process of building an IRS car when an engineered running car came up for a price I couldn't refuse. I may still
covert it to irs.
