Should aircooled VW run richer air/fuel ratio

Hi all,

Firstly, this is about high performance VW engines.

I recall someone saying or reading once that air cooled VW engines should be run slightly richer than other engines. From memory I think it was to aid slightly for heat issues in our engines, but I don't know.

So is there any truth to this and if you know either way for sure, please let me know.

Cheers, Kev

Kev, the main thing is the engine must not run too hot. If the temperature can be kept at a safe level, without dropping a lot of power, then err on the safe side and run a bit rich.

Do you have an air/fuel gauge fitted ?

slightly richer is good as per above to make it run cooler

Thanks guys. I may be getting it dyno tuned this week with a guy that knows and uses my brand ECU (Megasuirt) but not sure if he knows about air cooled vw's

Thought if I knew for sure I could say tune it and then add 2-3% across all tables, just as an example :?:

Greg - Laptop displays the ratio, but not sure if it is accurate until dyno and he sticks thing up exhaust pipe to compare.

Dave - Water injection will also cool it ;) And this may be a future mod

Cheers, Kev

Dyno AFR reading should be OK, but keep an eye on temps. Do you have a cylinder head temp. gauge ?

At 6000 RPM in 4th at Wakefield Park, No.8 Beetle showed 12.4 : 1 AFR on the gauge, and 350F on the CHT gauge, for what it's worth.

You need a big spark to run rich...hope yours is big enough ! I'm talking about spark, you fools.

Water Injection tooooooo FKIN complicated

Use the KISS method for all things VW

Get a sensor up its bum and check the ratio pretty simple and cheaper than a dyno tune by a guy that DOES NOT no VWs
U will be 12 out of pocket
