Hi Newbie with a 1962? or 1963? beetle
Hi everyone.
2nd beetle owner, as of today, yayay. (sold 1st beetle when kids were born in 1994, if its still out there, love to see a pic it was Qld Rego BUG65
& Yellow).
Back to now .... my plan for this beetle is to keep is as stock as possible. It was grey, and then about 2007 i it was painted a darker grey on the
outside only.
Rust is evident in usual places so my plan is to sort out what parts I need before she goes in for a body / panel & repaint.
A bonus feature was that she has installed a trip meter in the speedo I thought that was only for Karman's? Could this have been an optional extra
at the time?
What I need:
I need a D brace for the steering wheel (to activiate the horn), and an original beetle horn (12v), the current one sounds like a holden.
Did 1962/3 come with self cancelling indicators? If so, I'll need the self cancelling kit.
Advice on any trusty VW mechanics in Brisbane for tune up etc?

Appears to have a fuel gauge, so it may be a '62 1/2 model.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Yes it has a fuel gauge, body is 4 773 496 so is this a "62(1/2?)"
Dash lights (fuel gauge and speedo) were not working, tested the bulbs and cleaned the contacts yesterday, no change. Then with the lights on, i
moved the switch "left / right" and this seemed to be the problem, the dash lights began to respond with longer 'on' time with increased movement
of the switch from left to right. Dirty contact in the switch?

Mid 1962 saw the addition of a fuel gauge and 'Towel-rail' bumpers. It was known as the "Sixty-two-and-a-half".
Switches [and other things] suffer from lack of use.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Does anyone with a circa 1962 beetle have an original operating wiper washer? mine is there, not game to use it incase it falls apart?

Did some checking over this weekend - The horn doesn't work from the steering wheel brace.
I found a '3rd party' button under the dash where someone has installed a button and when you press this, hey presto, the horn works.
I want to get it back functioning via the steering wheel brace and remove the 3rd party button. When I removed the steering wheel hub "H", nice
brown wire is there ready, but I couldn't see the other end. Does anyone know where i start looking for the other end of the brown horn ring wire?
(it wasn't obvious anywhere I looked around the back side of the fuses, or even where the wires from the indicator selector enter the boot near the
back side of the speedo (there were 3, 1 went to the flasher brain, the other 2 went to the actual indicators). No trace of the brown horn wire.

I would trace the wires from the horn backwards if lost here is a wiring diagram for around your year model; this is what it "should" be wired like
but sounds like things are moved.
Not 100% sure but I thought the brown wire went down through the steering column?

The brown wire goes down in my steering column
There should also be an earth onto the steering column underneath the fuel tank...

Thanks - just confirming my brown horn wire is under the H on the steering wheel. I will trace this weekend down to the horn and see what happens.
Unfortunately the current working horn sounds like a Holden. Are there 12v horns available that still sound like the 6v horn?

The brown wire actually brings the earth up via the steering shaft .Make sure the loop around the rubber uni joint is not broken .The return wire from
the horn (also brown) connects to the bottom of the steering tube ,the tube connects to the moving part of the horn ring, when pressed it completes
the circuit and hey presto the horn works!

Update: Horn Project still in progress ........
New Project - External Rear view Mirror:
The replacement external mirror I bought today wont fit without significant adjustment (see existing set up in little photo, it has a connector upon a
connector and looks crap). Therefore I consulted the photos I got with this Beetle and the mirror in the photo looks just great!
It might just screw on?, no additional connectors? Is it VW? What is it? Please see photo. Any assistance graciously accepted.

The ones in the pictures involve you changing the hinge pins.
You can buy hinge pins with threads the stick out the top (the overall length are longer than the standard ones..)

Yes, when I removed the round mirror off the grey beetle above, the hinge pin is threaded and sticks out of the top. In order to 'install' the
round mirror, they have invented several transition threads, which look ugly in my opinion. I wish to remove the round mirror and replace it with the
square mirror it originally came with......just don't have a square mirror yet.
