Finally... the seat cams...
They work great!
Working out how to get the seat out took almost as long as fitting the cams. For those who've never done it there is a small tab on the tunnel side slider that once you push it down allows the seat to slide forward into the footwell and slide right off the runners! No bolts, spanners, easy as!
My cams were pretty worn, mainly because a prvious owner had turned them so hard that they were jammed into one spot. they had also wired the seat back catch so that it could be flipped forward without having to use the latch...

This is how I dismantled them...
First unclip the spring that tension the shaft to the seat base.
Gently tapped out the roll pin on the adjustment knob (nearest to the door side of the seat). Bert tells me it's a 3mm drift. I didn't have the right size so squared of the end of a long 3mm nail and gently tapped it out.
Do the same with the small end cap on the tunnel side of the seat.
There should be a small plastic bush that the seat back arm rides on the shaft. Take these out gently. Mine are pretty worn but I doubt I'll ever get new ones so I put them back in. Something could be used as a replacement I'm sure.
I couldn't quite slide the seat back off the shaft so gently tapped out the roll pins from both cams and then tapped the shaft towards the adjustment knob end till I could get the back off.

I slid the shaft out by knocking one cam along towards the middle until the shaft would clear seat frame and slide it out. Make sure to note which cam goes which end!
The cams should slide off the shaft without much effort.
The new cams look brilliant alongside the old flogged out ones.
Assembly is basically the reverse of dismantling.
Make sure everything lines up as you go. Cams are on the right way round and in line with each other.
And put the springs back on the right way!

I made sure everything was functioning properly before adding grease.
As has been said before by Bert and Nils...
TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF THE SEAT BACK WHEN ADJUSTING YOUR BACKREST!
This will limit the wear and these new cams will out last the car.

Thanks Bert for getting the ball rolling on these and Thanks Nils for making it happen!
Rating... Bloody Brilliant! :tu::tu:

Please don't look at that photo of the seat and all the junk in the background!
:sniffle:
Yes, parts of my yard make Steptoe and Son look tidy!
But there is some good gear in there, and a free dump day coming up!
This weekend's mission is to get the Notch back out to the road, and clean it up before Day of the Volkswagen.

After looking at Berts my original ones don't look too bad. Drove with the new ones today. How good is it to be able to use the back of the seat!

Luxury

Terry, I was surprised @ how screwed mine were - fully explained why the backrest stayed in position even though the knob turned - it's so much comfortable now to have the backrest in position :tu::cool::yes:

That's Cool Bert.
Looks like an early Lowback seat. Extra retaining screw for the Adjuster Knob, doesn't show roll pins holding the other end either. Seat back retainer has a different mechanism as well. What was the diagram in?

Hi Terry,

Found this by chance - it's in a 88MB Body parts file for Type 3 I found - part numbers provided also. Lots of other sections also

If you want to download it (site not happy if you view on line and state download & save to view) I can send you the link via email or PM.

Screw on knob think you'll find is for a cover plate - chrome

Cheers & beers
Bert

I'll swap you for that drive Bert. Your roads are better along that stretch. Barrier Highway/ Main North Road from here to Adelaide is like ocean waves with wind chop added in! Now the motors running well and the seats are reclining, I think it's time I looked at the suspension and steering.
We drove the Notch home from Queensland back in 2014. Sunshine Coast to Toowoomba via Kilcoy, Somerset Dam, Esk, Ravensbourne. Fun drive, plenty of corners to make Bec Queasy!
