They need machining of your existing nose cone, so need to send yours away for mod (or do exchange).
Do not think anyone is Oz is doing them. Plenty of vendors OS offer exchange.
There are two main design styles, one based on the factory design, one based on a US design. The US style is a little more economical.
Can provide more info/details if you need more.

I installed mine last year, purchased from AA Transaxles in the USA. Very happy with it so far, install was straight forward. A bit easier for me as I
had the engine and GB out to re-seal the tank and replace all fuel lines. AA Transaxles build to the factory design. Total cast was ~$1700-$1800 with
freight backward and forward, import duty exchange rate etc etc.

There are a number of places to go for the US style one, and generally cheaper. I have not heard bad things about either design, but figured I'd
stick with factory copy.

You could also try a personal message to Arne (kleinersyncro on the kombi club forum), I think he is looking to bring a few in.
Article on the two designs, there are plenty of articles out there on them. The Samba also as a lot of posts about them.

There are differing views on them, some say it takes away from the idea of the Syncro, constant 4WD on demand, but I prefer to save the drive line and
can select AWD when conditions require it.
Oh, do you have a diff lock? If not, you will also need the vacuum tank and panel for the switches etc, they left this out when they were delivered
with no diff lock.

I went with the AA decoupler. I have a spare decoupler housing but Peter is using it as a core to get an AA one. Will get his back when he gets it
fitted.

I also have a AA Transaxle de-coupler - its awesome and works great - you can even put it in 4wd doing 100km/hr - not that I have or you would need
to.
Mine was a little cheaper than Andy's one as our dollar was much better when i bought it - but basically the same price.
A mate in the USA suggested to keep the housing in-case something goes wrong with the decoupler - you could then send it back and keep using your
syncro while it is fixed.

Hey Guys,
I'm in here as well, just sneaking more around in the Kombi club forum.
Indeed, I got a good source from a reliable dealer in Germany for factory style Decouplers at a price of EUR 599 incl. 19% GST (which we are normally
able to deduct from the price). The last ones I got in were incl. shipping around AUD $950 at current exchange rate (complete set with hoses, vacuum
switch, bulb for the dashboard etc.) + shipping costs for the core to/within Germany + core charge AUD $ 350 (which I offer to collect in Australia,
so no Bank transfer charge will accrue for transferring it to/from Germany). At the current exchange rate, you will just stay below the AUD $ 1000
mark which saves you 10% import duty.
Regarding the exchange housing, that's a bit of a difficult point:
I know Alex since a while so we came up with an agreement to your benefit. I have got two spare nosecones in Germany which I'll give to Alex as
exchange so he can assemble new decoupler sets. Which means, I actually take responsibility for collection of the core charge and your old housing
(which has to be in good order, clean (!!!) and no cracks or missing parts!) which either has to be send direct to Germany (approx. AUD $ 135) or I
may can offer to take it with me as travel back home at least once a year (which will cost you than maybe AUD $ 50 in total). However, availability of
the option that I take it back home is limited to 2-3 per year and also on how far away my next trip is. Again "Worst case" you have to send it
direct to Alex.
If you are interested, please send me a mail with your contact details to kleinersyncro(at)yahoo.com and I'll fill you in with further information
Cheers Arne
PS: I don't make money with this deal nor do I gain any benefit or advantages for myself! |
