50 years VW ownership

A UK lady, Mrs Karen Wilson of York, has recently been celebrated by VW UK for owning VWs continuously for 50 years.

She bought her first VW in 1967 and has since owned another Beetle, a Danbury camper, three Golfs and 10 Polos, making 16 VWs altogether.

She was celebrated by her local VW dealer, JCT600 Volkswagen York, with coffee, cake, flowers and a presentation. She was promoted by VW UK's director Alison Jones and featured in VW UK press releases.

https://www.vwheritage.com/blog/2017/12/07/50-years-continuous-vw-ownership/

Can YOU beat this record? Who has the Australian record for owning VWs continuously?

I know we can beat the Poms at this. The longest I currently know is Club member Bevan Summerlad in Maclean, who bought his first VW in 1958 and still owns them. We'll publicise the best we can find - and try to get VW Australia off their arse to promote this as well.

Phil, I bought my first VW (new) in January, 1960. It was Gunyah Grey. Since then I have owned at least 20 VWs, of various models - Beetles, Kombis, S/C, Golf, etc., etc.

Today I pick up my new V6 Amarok!

I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Well done Greg, I knew you would be up there. You are currently ahead of Ray and Shirley Pleydon (1963), and Laurie Murray and Ken Davis (1964) for continuous VW ownership.

My Dad bought his first VW (a 1954) in 1957, then a new one in March 1959 (from R. R. Nock Pty Ltd, VW dealers in Parkes). He owned that for almost 20 years but unfortunately our family went non-VW after that (new GLS and GLD Golfs were much too expensive in 1978 so Dad bought a Mazda 323). I bought my first VW, the '64 in 1982 and have owned nothing but VWs since - but I'm only up to 36 years continuously.

I'm hoping we can find other really long-term VW owners like yourself!

There is an old lady in Kenmore that bought her 1954 (named Otto) brand new. It was actually one of the first 5 sold in Qld and it is still in the original black colour. The motor was changed in the early 60's but she still has the old one as well in the garage. I still see Otto driving around the area every now and then at the hands of her children.

I think that Margaret Love from Port Macquarie would be a contender. Steve Carter and myself have had VWs since 1971. (47 years)

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

I brought my 1st bug, a 1955 in 1967 and after spending my apprentices wages on it for almost a year I then brought my 1961 Ghia from Robert's Auto Centre in Gosford. It was my daily transport to work in Tuncurry (40km's each way) for many years. I woo'd and won my wife, carried both of our children in it, 1 at a time (in a bassinet with a net cover to keep them in), we had 2 Kids booster seats in the rear for a short period before my wife's sense of humour crashed and we took to a Nissan 260C until they grew up. The Ghia was then used for our eldest son's wedding car and now just resides in the shed for most of the year with the occasional run to keep me happy.

73 beetle - 5years
66 splitty - 24 years (and counting)
55 Oval - 7 years
63 Notch - 4 years
66 Karmann Ghia - 4 years
62 Beetle - 1 year
58 Beetle - 4 Years (and counting)
69 Single cab - 3 years (and counting)

So can I claim that as 52 years?? :)

Only 28 actual years!

And 34 years of going to VW shows (I was ten when I went to my first and 16 when I got the 73 Beetle)

Guys, impressive, most impressive!

However, I think Volkswagen views continuous ownership as continuing to purchase a new Volkswagen over a 50 year period.

They only lied in America. You only heard about it because it was in the US and not a US made vehicle. Don't believe what you see on TV.

I've owned my Ghia for 36 years, but more amazing it's build date is the day I was born.
