Buying an Interstate car
Hi Fellow vdubbers,
I have found a bug that I'm rather interested in, it was a South Australian car bought up to Sydney, not registered and then sold again further up
the coast. The seller I've been taking to said he has a letter from the Sydney seller detailing the sale, but no official proof of ownership..
Reading the Service NSW website ownership is tied to rego:
https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/transfer-or-register-interstate-ve...
https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/vehicle-registration/how-to-register-a-vehic...
Currently the car still has SA plates, so still not registered in NSW
The seller seems genuine, but how do you know if the car has been stolen from another state and tucked away for a while?
I'm thinking the forum members would have shipped cars all over the country that have run out of rego so might know?
Thanks in advance.
Lewis

i would get a NSW blue slip identifying the chassis and engine numbers and take it to the RMS for a search
They should be able to a search and advise you if your Ok to register
Take the plates and what other paper work you have with you

Hey thanks for getting back so quick vw54. The car is definitely a project, will need trailering back to my place. I do have the chassis number, body
number and a close pic of the vehicle identification plate. Would that be ok to take to the RMS and ask for a search (along with the SA plate number)
do you reckon? Another quick question, do you have to declare the car off the road whilst being restored? Cheers.

What is the chassis number and what year is the car supposed to be
No you dot have to declare the car while being restored however you can get it insured but you would have to declare numbers etc to insurer
Does it have an engine

From what I can see the number is 1151216, supposed to be a '56. The body number is MKA13153, The id plaque is hard to read but does say it was made
in West Germany so not a Aus CKD car.

I think MKA is an Australian assembled car by Martin & King.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Thanks AKA! Odd that the there is a plate above the identification plate saying made in West Germany, the original 1200 engine has gone with a later
one in its place, but it has some of the goody bits (trafficators, original wings)

The body number MKA13153 as per above this was assembled in Australia and is not required for registration Only the Chassis and engine number
Do you have an Engine
Chassis number 1151213 indicates FEB or MAR 1956
there should be a ID Plate riveted to the wheel well near the West Germany Plate 100 x 35 mm approx. which has the chassis number stamped on it

Thanks Vw54, both plates are in the wheelwell, but the really odd thing the type states 1/11 which from what I can see if a LHD oval (and 1/12 is a
rhd oval), but from looking at the car there has been no conversion, the dash looks original and the front bulkhead where the steering column goes
through to the steering box is original on the left had side. Oddily the bonnet release is on the left hand side too not the right (I would have
thought that would have been on the drives side for a rhd car?)
Any thoughts on that?

Can't make out the engine number from the picture I took, but it is not original as I think the alternator stand was part of the engine case on the
early ones and this is bolted to the case with the 13mm four bolts.
