getting my hands on a N.O.B - no pun intended.


Sorry about the heading....

But i was wondering if anyone has seen a NOB - New 'old' beetle - in Aus. I was thinking of importing one instead of spending $millions fixing up a '60 - just importing a NOB from mexico or the states seems more cost effectve in the long run.

any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that as a "new car" it would have to pass Australian ADR regs to get registration. A Mexican Beetle would never pass crash tests , air bags ect ect. This would cost big $$$$. Left to right conversion and import duties would push the cost up too. :(

Thanks Grey 57, i guess the dream will have to be put on the back burner, unless i import a second hand one :D or until they (meaning VW) realise that they should just bring em out here :)
beats all the freakin' barinas and such that are going round at the moment. (well that's my opinion - not entirely true :D )

I agree fully agree with you on that one brother. I was looking at the new Falcon & Commodore today thinking that they are all looking the same. Boring!!!

Grey, i totally agree, i have 3 beetles... although they all "look" the same to other people... a veedubber can always notice the differences.... but EVERYONE (ok, ok i'm generalising... a bit) thinks these new cars just all look the same..

Actually, the rules for single imports has been dramatically simplified. Go see one of the many import shops that sell Toyota Soarers and talk to them about what you need to do.

Here are the regs from the horse's mouth:

You can now have LHD cars that would never pass Australian ADRs or emissions like the V10 Viper brought in.

Fermans at Peakhurst has about 4 new body shells that they brought in a few years ago.

You would have to convert L to RHD and purchase a donor car for chassis and other bits.

You will find that it is not that simple to import a non ADR compliant car to Aus. BTW there is no ADR for airbags..........Vanderaj you will require to have an approved shop that is certified for that model ADR compliance, they will need to give you written documentation that the vehicle will be complied once here in Aust. There is no one here in Aust that has the compliance authority for this vehicle, there are plenty for the jap imports etc. There is a list of approved vehicle imports on the web...not sure were. Then apply to vehicle safety standards aust for an import permit showing the above docs. Just do what Steve said, not a problem.

You will have to bring the vehicle in as parts IE: must have at least the engine/gearbox/wheels and axles off the vehicle, these can be shipped here but must not be shipped on the same vessel. Plan for 15% tax on all parts + GST on all costs to the point of landing...purchase price + shipping + insurance + duty + dock fees....or you could go and live in Mexico for a year and own it and be able to import with no restrictions. Easy ha.

Actually, although desirable for daily use, you no longer have to RHD a LHD vehicle. I recently heard some Aussie Mustang fans complaining that they could have left it LHD without the expense of a (usually crap) RHD conversion.

Just plonk a sticker on the back warning people. And drive carefully, especially during overtaking and going around some corners.
