alternate aircon
if i fit the 1.8l subi engine from the sportswagen i bought last weekend, there is an aircon pump on the side of the engine. since my original heater
setup is missing, would it be possible/simple to run pipes from the aircon unit up under the car to where the old heater pipes used to attach at the
front? any suggestions/comments on the idea?

too big a job......
Yes you can get a compressor to run in the same place but trying to get an evap coil to fix let a lone match that model compressor is way too hard.
On top of that the old compressor will be R12 and you will have to get it rebuilt to R134a ........ not worth it.
Buy some matched uqipment if you have to but there must be kits for bays you could modify

the engine that i want to fit (the 1.8 subi) already has functioning aircon attached, thats why i wanted to know if i could use it and pipe it to the
kombi

The bit attatched is only half of it.
The evaporator is a coil and fan basically but it is sized specically for the compressor to work.
You cant hook any old coil up to a compressor.
On top of that you have to wire/interlock it with each other so the fan cycles on and off to properly condense the gas......
You either need to get the matching evap unit for that one or places like Lokelock Lukes "may" sell a replacement one that will work with a
bit of work.
It would be much easier to get a matching set

the subi is complete, aircon fully operational, so all parts are there and matching. it was the transfer i was worried about.

I couldn't see anything wrong with using the original heater tubes for the air con...
The subaru air con should already be using R134A gas as the old refrig gas hasn't been available for many years. anyway , if it was using the old
gas the system only has to be flushed out to use the New R134A gas.
I think you have some great ideas there..
I am going to air con My Beetle in the future some time.. and have looked into what I have to do... cheers
