Steering change
Got a question, probably for the Baja crowd more than the rest of us. Has anyone changed their steering over to rack and pinion? is it an improvement
over normal bug steering?
If so,
a. How did you change it over
and
b. What sort of differnece did it make to the car?
Just curious at this stage

Hi
I fitted one from a 1303 (L) to a 1302 (Superbug) what sort of Beetle do you have? I have now found the steering to be so direct that I had to almost
re-learn to drive my bug again.
Things to look out for, make sure it turns the right way, when you turn the streeing wheel right, it turns right. If you have torsion beamfront end,
look for one off a car that has the the steering knuckles at the rear of the stub axles. Also look for one that is similar to the 1303 / Passat rack,
it has really long tie rods that start almost in the middle of the rack, avoid one that have stubby arms at each end, you will get less bump steer
with the one with long arms, have a look at a Camira rack it might siut your needs.

Steering
At the moment the steering is just a normal setup for a '68 semi auto. The shell will be a '56 oval though.
I want to try and get a bit more responsiveness out of it when I get it on teh road, and think that rack and pinion could help (as well as sway bars,
good tires, engine etc etc etc)
The wreckers at Blacktown has a 1303 (L) (I think), if not then I am sure there is a camira in there.
The other thing I want to do is get a column (out of a 1303 I think) that suits my dash etc, with a collapsable section. I have this tendancy to avoid
spearing myself with the column in case of crash!

Please tell me you're not making a '56 oval body into a baja. I felt bad enough cutting up my '68 into a baja. |

Hi
An L bug rack turns the wrong way, thats why I suggested the Camira rack, Im sure it would trun the right way. You need a 76 Beetle, 1500 Beetle or 68
or later 1300 steering colmun, they have the colapisble section in them. But if use the rack you will need to make a custom column with U joints. The
U joints will make the column colapse depending on the angle that the U joints go through, thats all the 1302 & 1303s use along with a colapsible
section the steering wheel, Momo make a colapsible steering wheel boss.

Steering
Noooooo
not chopping the oval. Just want to make it safer to drive. The base is a 68 semi auto pan, so I figure so long as I don't cause major damage to
the shell, I feel I am preserving the idea, if not the car. Just want to get a bit of space between me and the steel spear in case of a front end
hit.
As for the camira rack, I'll take a look. I have seen in the US mags that they have made a brace to mount rack and pinion gear on off the front
steering, so I may end up importing that, and a custom column. But at the moment, other bills have jumped to the head of the line

Steering rack
The new rack I'm putting in the Spyder (ball joint front end) is a shortened Barina unit with long steering arms to reduce the bump steer.
I'll post some images when I receive them from the builder in New Zealand.
Spyder-WISD 07-09-05 11.6s @ 125 MPH
Speedster-WISD Nats 05 14.4s @ 89 MPH
Jet cruiser-Coogee 22-09-05 900 deg C @ 110,000 rpm
Weaseling out of things is what separates us from the animals....................Except the Weasel.
