If you....a splitty.....?

OK the split window kombi's are classic. safari windows are way cool

What sort of engine and mechanics would you use in it if you planned to travel the world in it through all sorts of conditions? Well, maybe not through rivers/water

Could it remain stock and do OK if you had it thoroughly reconditioned? Parts may be hard to get remember in remote places.

What do you see as needing to be done for it to last the journey?

What parts would be essential to carry? OK petrol is a given!!

I'm just throwing this out there at the moment:sandrine

I'd be interested to hear comments

O.K.
I am only interested in splits, have had beetles and bays but now it splits.

Right now to upset the Volks Wagens are God people

If I was to be totally honest I would have to say if I was going to travel around the world in a split I would fit a Subaru motor in it, not a turbo just a new scooby flat four.
They are more economical and they are new, not recond or re-maufactured but new.
They are more powerful and as it is a new motor shouldnt need to take any spares apart from the obvious like belts and plugs etc.

The VW only people are now going to say if you recon a type 1 motor it will be reliable, but it wont be as economical and powerful, also if you bore or make the type 1 bigger it still uses more fuel and is less reliable.

Lets see the replies to this one then?????
my view only

Cheers

I would have to say a 1600dp with well matched and fresh built 'box.
Actually you could go with bigger than 1600, but I'd carry a spare T1 longblock on board with me. The 'box would have to have a LSD. Preferably an IRS conversion (Indian Automotive style) 4 wheel disks, steel wheels 6x15j with with good quality, durable, multi purpose rubber. Highback seats, GPS and sat nav, petrol heater and the rest would be whatever you want to make it your presonal home for however long you plan your trip.

Keep it completely stock, 40 hp, no stress on any components as long as you are not in a hurry... (PMG now has 101,000 miles on original engine...)

12 volts is a luxury

P.S. I have been through central Australia and to Cape York (in the "good old road" days) without a hitch in a well maintained standard splitty :D

Apparently there are new petrol heaters you can buy which are brilliant. A couple of guys on shoptalk have sworn by them.

No Problem to go to the cape now, I understand it is bitumen 95% of the way. I did it in a stock standard 66' split (1500cc). I did pull two of the outriggers off the chassis & floated about 30m downstream on a river crossing....... But we went places that 4WD cars might have thought twice about...

Just as long as you are in no big hurry on the long road stretches, but hey in a splitty, you have more time to wave to people!

I'd want to run a stock 1500 or 1600 single port with some external upgrades for reliability such as remote oil cooler, electronic ignition and 12 Volt alternator (need the 12V system to charge batteries for the camera and GPS ;)) :thumb
