rotary conversion?


hi there,
something a bit nuts is going through my mind for my oval...a rotary conversion, as anyone done so, what needs to be done...all i want is to put the the engine in,still carby like a 12a..maybe turbo...don't want all the trouble of fuel injection..any comments would be much appreciated...also what gearbox to run?

Legally you will only get away with a naturally aspirated 12A, and only if you can prove your car weighs over 800kg. They multiply the rotary capacity by 2 to get an equivalent capacity for the legal side of things.

Rotor Conversion


Hi There, I've just started a 13B Turbo conversion, I'm going to run the motor on straight gas to bypass the fuel injection etc. I've mounted the radiator in the spare wheel well, and am currently looking into the most convinient way of transfering the coolent from front to back. Any ideas ?? If you need any info please get in touch.

Hi

As Wes said there is factory weight to consider with all conversions. Check with your rego people. A 12A is 2.4 litre, so your car must have weighed over 800 kgs from the factory eg 3 x 800 kgs = 2400cc maximum, a turbo 13b would need your bug to weigh 1040kg from the factory, not likely.

As far as getting the water to the front of the car, I used 1.5 inch stainless tubes running under the chassis near the heater channel bolts.

The car needs an engineers report, Brake fade test, lane change manover etc. I've located an acredited engineer in Ballarat who is happy to help me gain rego for the car. I've heard and read of some people running flexible truck heater pipes through their heater channels, do you think this could work??

I think the idea of a rotary in beetle is a good idea. I know some guys who are into rotarys and some that are into veedubs and they both have something in common.
That is the Commodore boys all look down at them generally.
Dare to be somewhat different I say.
I get a real black and white response in the bus. Some people out of the blue at the traffic lights will wind down the window and say 'cool man' others will say 'why do up a kombi?' or similar.
I enjoy the attention good or bad. :D

Go the rotor option, no problem at all.
I'll help you,
I cant see the difference between puting a rotary engine into a bug VS removing the body and replacing it with a buggy and getting out on the sand,
Except one is easilly reversed.
VW owns NSU, and NSU owns the rights to the rotary engine design so its really not a blasphemous option.
If I had the adapter kitt funds right now, the rotary engine in my garage would be bolted in quick smart.
I find it frustrating that I need to ring Herbies neck just to merge into traffic.
130 reliable horsepower sounds good to me!
I know it not legal but a turbo rotary sounds awesome to me too,

Ok ok point taken my apolagies to anyone I upset but yes I'm not a fan of rotaries in or out of VW's however my hat goes off to Mazda for thinking outside the square when it comes to engine development.

Just let me say in defence i'm not narrow minded if i was to walk past your car and it had a rotary conversion and it was engineered real nice I would appreciate the work you've put in however if it looked like everyone elses i'd probably keep walking.

Take Wes's baja, hats off to him for his conversion he's done a fantastic job and it doesn't just go quick it looks good to. At the end of the day if all you want to do is go fast relatively cheap go a rotary.

1302Steve, love your bug, I think the main problem that I'll come accross is passing the brake fade test. The engineer is recomending a brake upgrade. I've spoken to a few poeple and they reckon 1975 porche 911 front disk (ventilated) will bolt on up front with a little machining and go for type 3 drums on the back. What do you think??????

I can tell you the 13B isn't legal in QLD or NSW in a bug.

Vic is different, but as Steve pointed out it won't be for long.

It sounds like I need to get moving with the project. Body and pan are seperate at the moment, sandblasted, and primered. I'm about to start the IRS conversion then I can start painting and putting it back together. Cheers for the comments.

I look at it this way fuz, If there is another vee dub on the road then that is great. If someone wants to try something different (eg water cooled engines) In their vw's then we should support this. At the end of the day it's cheep horsepower that you could have alot of fun with. 13Beetle !! ;)

I thought i had read that the rotary was a high weighted motor and made the bug a bit twitchy in handling???

Fuz - if the rotaries are so shit and only last two years, why is it that so many of the series 1 rx-7's still have original 12A's after 20 odd years ?

Wankels are the same as vw's as holdens, ford, ferrari and any other engine you can think of - look after them right, and they will last a shitload longer than if you cane them to death and dont look after oil etc.

Talk facts not opinions.

I don't care what you do to you VW as long as its on the road & looking kool.
If you want to do anything to your car...it should be appreciated for the desire to think outside the square...
If it wasn't for people like this, where would we be in motoring & technology.

OK.. so i my opinions differ from that of your own but they are exactly that my opinions.. i just think that twin rotar engines while are cheap $ - HP they are not what i would want to put into an oval.. so yes i spurt off some unwaranted crap at times but its my opinion.. besides the last rx7 that used to cruise with my group of friends fried.. so based on MY experiences i would not reccommend one, HOWEVER as i said these are my opinions and i am glad that your opinions differ cos.. how boring would life be if we all thought the same thing..

and to close this sad rebuttle .. stop pickin on me im only little :P
