I had to delete 2 posts, because they were not engine conversions.
To clarify, this section is about engine conversions. These are when you put a water-cooled or non-vw air cooled engine into an air-cooled vw. It
could even include putting a V8 in a golf.
So the purpose of this post is to list what people are doing (/done) what engine conversions. That way if you are also doing the same conversion and
having a struggle, you might be able to contact one of these people for help.

My first post........
I'm in Perth and have a 76 kombi with a Toyota 18RU in the back and a HZ radiator on the roo bars. Doesn't look wonderful and it's not in the Suby
or V6/8 class but it was there when I got it (although hardly going) and it purrs along and gets a few double-takes on the road (probably because of
the rusty bodywork and roo-strike dents).
I've mostly had air-cooled VWs so the water thing is a bit of a novelty although I'm getting used to it.
Here's a question: it starts Ok when cold but when its hot it's just no go. Seems like it could be a case of vapour lock, maybe the carby (weber
32DG) is getting too hot. It needs a few pumps on the accelerator to get it going when it's cooled, although it will get going when bump-started hot.
The fuel pump is new and I've put in a hot-start relay. The starter motor probably needs brushes and a new bushing in the bell housing and I'll get
around to that (and the million other things). I thought about maybe getting a heat shield fabricated to try to cure the hot start problem. What are
suitable materials/configurations for heat shields? |

I assume the engine is in a good state of tune, so I will only comment on the vapor issue...You could be right about this.
First question..... Are you using a electric fuel pump or stock mechanical?
Second question..... Is the engine bay well ventlated? You might be getting a bit of
'heat-soak' when the car has been parked after a warm drive.
Third question..... Where are your fuel lines and filter? Make sure they are not close to any heat sources like engine block, exhaust, coolant
lines.
And lastly..... Is the battery getting hot? Not good for starting a warm engine...
Best of luck...

Thanks for the suggestions.
Firstly, must check the tune......
The fuel pump is an aftermarket mechanical job. Engine bay not ventilated, must cut some holes in the engine lid or something similar. One section of
the fuel line does run close to the rocker box cover. I'll think about replacing with a metal line, shielding and re-routing. Must check if the
battery is getting hot.. |
