Hello,
I'm a 23 year old student (car technology) driving a '77 VW camper and I'm building in a tuned EJ20 engine. No turbo though...
It has performance camshafts (I can also change the timing of those), flowed heads with larger valves, Dual Weber 40mm (maybe someday a DTA
injection), lightened flywheel. It has +/- 200 bhp... (when it is build in and I can drive to school with it, I will post a dyno report, high school
is fun!!!)
The only thing that is bothering me, is the radiator setup. I think I'll fit a large radiator under my bus and a small one in the aux. battery
place...
I hope it 'll cool nicely, because the temperature will be a bit higher than a complete stock EJ20 with the higher compression ratio and the other
performance parts...
This is a very nice forum! Wish I had one like these in my own language...
Are there any usefull links (except this forum and the shoptalk) for a Suby conversion in a T2 bus? Shoot!!

I am in tasmania and i own a 1969 1500 beetle with a ea82 turbo conversion. I have been building myself for the last two years. Keep wanting to do
more. Alot of fun to drive. I have also lowered the car and put on a set of 19x8 inch BSA rims. EB falcon rear brake conversion. Haltech E6x
Intercooler ( top mount). It is putting out around 120kw at the wheels.

I have finally started to make some progress with my conversion.
Im in the process of replacing my 2ltr manual from my 79 Bay with a Toyota, 4ltr, Quad Cam, 191Kw stock beast of an engine and slipping in a freshly
recond and worked 89 3spd auto.
If any one is thinking of going back to stock my 2ltr(carb) and 091 4 spd manual are up for grabs.
I have decided to go auto because i dont enjoy driving the manual with its ratios. Also the torque converter is very forgiving on the autos.
I got my adaptor plate from Volks Conversions. Cheers John Sherman
I also want to jack it up for that Baja look, this is mainly to bring down the RPM on the highway, but has the added bonus of looking TOUGH!!
Will be running either a MicroTech LTX-8s, or Haltech E6X.
A full custom exhaust system will also be fitted out. There is no way i would ever keep the stock 1UZFE extractors. If you have seen them then you
will know why.
And a nice big custom big air intake.
With the right tuning i could be getting over 220Kw at teh wheels. But considering i dont know exactly how strong the auto is i will be happy with
200Kw atw. Ill just have to see how she handles.
In the future(around 2 years) i would like to convert the fuel system over to gas.
If the gearbox holds out well(and the funds) id also consider a Supercharger.
Once the gearbox is back from CBB for rebuild, my bus will be in the Debiasi workshop getting the trans changed out and a cradle for the V8 made.
So i will have photos of what the engine looks like sitting very snuggly in the bay.

ok, heres some pics with the old engine. a 1776 with bits and peices. hated it. unreliable and unuseable torque. im goin to dress up the engine bay
somewhat after the conversion, with some ali sheet bead-rolled around the edges like my dash. Pssibly with the same pinstriping. The doorcards are
going too
in this one you can see the removeable rear valance and scooped decklid (all metal). Valance removed due to the engines reliability!
and this is what i started with a year ago.....
ands here she is on crappy wheels!

i have a 13b injection engine from a 1988 RX7. I am making the adapter plates myself and have assisted a machineshop in removing the centre from a
mazda flywheel and dressing it onto the VW flywheel starter ring and clutch. Im going to use a kennedy stage 2 clutch and make the clutch actuation
hydraulic. Currently using a stock VW 1300 gearbox, but ill see what happens; torque kills gearboxes; not power. I have had a stainless exhaust system
made up with 1/2 inch thick flanges exiting vertically down, and the muffler sitting behind the rear apron. The ECU will be stock, and i have machined
up billet aluminium blanking plates to cover the holes left by steering pumps etc. I shall also be starting to make up adapter kits cheaply for
anybody this side of the pond (the UK) and possibly for you guys down there. Let me know if anybodies interested.
any thoughts?

I'm sure you will have a market, if a small one.
There are a couple of rotor powered dubs here in Perth.
They go fairly well, but seems to be having some issues with transaxle reliabilty. Though that could be down to who built them and how they
drive'm!
We've done a few Subi conversions and sofar, so good.
Good HP, very drivable, cheap to run and VERY quiet!
But I am getting old!!!

yeah i think the next conversion will be a bus box into the beetle. The ratios match the rotary better and the gearboxes are bullettproof. We can get
a kit for around £40 (i dont know how many dollars) over here (without shafts) . Either that or i will go will a lighter duty clutch; the slip may
assist the gearbox and prevent rash breakages. What you think?
Have you not had any transaxle issues running scooby?

have new fully worked ea82 turbo in 77 d/cab n lovin it but sadly have almost killed gbox {hideous noises} lovin it almost run in radiator under
between chassis chiped ecu was saving for haltech when i came across a too nice manx and... seeing i already have a 13bppt....... i guess ill just
have to get used to driving on two wheels, thinking of going for seperate handbrake set up FOR STEERING

Hiya,
Onto my 3rd Scooby conversion so far.
Already done an EJ22 into a custom Baywindow, Same EJ22 then put into a 67 Type 3 Fastback and now stripping down the fasty and turning it into a
street/strip car with an EJ20T with a nice dose of laughing gas 
Best strip time so far was 15.04(no gas) in the fasty before breaking the 2nd gearbox in a week 
The new improved fasty is gonna be kitted out with discs all round, 2L bus box, 6 point race spec cage and the turbo motor

I am some way through getting the EJ25 in to my Syncro.
I am fabbing up the engine crossmember at the moment.
Made a mistake today and made one bend too tight.:cry
Guess I'll have to work out a way around it tomorrow.

I didn't actually get around to pulling the waterboxer out until 2 weeks ago so the conversion itself won't take that long to do but it did take me
a long time to start and meanwhile I'm missing out on those distractions

Make sure your fastback is going to get near 10's before spending the money on the roll cage. Otherwise it could be spent on more useful stuff.nn[Edited on 16-9-2005 by fozee ]

The reason I'm doing my kombi is for a surf wagon. I have the same problem as you great surf nearby and three kids.
What do you do 1. go surfing. 2. work on the surf wagon?
Test fitted the engine and gearbox last night (just mounted on the front GB mount with the engine blocked up) Will start the crossmember build on the
weekend. Got my plans approved by my Engineer on Tuesday.

sadly, since I started this 4 weeks ago I have not surfed.
The Syncro is my wifes daily driver and whilst she is happy to drive the '65 (converted) split screen panel around town, she is taking the kids on a
home schooling camp to the Flinders Ranges in mid October so I am hoping to get it done for her to take then.
She will be away for a week - I will have the van done - bring on the surf!
