with a tube chasis u can have a totaly custom back end, custom wide glass gaurds and still look semi stock.........

o well he will be told !

Don't actually mind it. But I would have done it alot less "box" shaped, pulled the top lip closer to the top of the tire and have the edge of the guard run off around the sides (like a V8 supercar, leaves some tire exposed, but hey!)
Wide rear ends have significant advantages, it creates a toed in effect, which promotes alot more direction in the front end. Definately one way to combat the understeer these cars unfortuantely suffer alot from. Well, you can always dial in 4+ degrees negative camber up front and chuck some sort of spoiler under the bumper. But then again tire useage would be increased dramatically and those kamei spoilers are the only cool looking ones out there, but don't fit early cars. Plus sticking with the standard VW pan is also a bonus. The things are super rigid and skeletal like in layout, so tying the ends together with a cage will only make it better. Then add to this the amount of aftermarket items available your only drawback is lack of aftermarket for the type3 front end.
Each for their own I reckon, personally I don't like roofracks, yet can see the functionality of a wider arse end. So go figure :P (played with karts, easy way to combat understeer, get the back end wider)
Makes the rear wheels look dwarfed from this angle tho. But it is purposeful by the looks of it, with the quick fit screws, cage, seats, etc...
Any idea if the whole back comes away to access the running gear? Or what the running gear actually is? If it's a standard 1600 I'll be screaming "RICE" like a mad starving man in a chinese restaurant.

OOoooooher that comes sooo close to working but just misses.

I think the guy needed the rubber on the back for the reasons Cam so neatly described in words better than I could draw in a picture!

He then went about the easiest body mod to fit it in. I reckon they are 'glass. There are fasteners visible top and bottom front.

I reckon its a case of function over form with a shiny coat of yellow paint ;)

one wiper, no guts to it except cage and seat. I wonder if it has wheelie bars lolol

oh well

He did it for the same reason people put fireglass guards on bugs and lift kits on buses. Because he can!

kkkombi - what we are trying to say is with all that effort it could have been done to fit the form of the car a little better, all that effort and they stick out like dogs balls.
