Depends on what you're fitting it to. The Subaru EJ20 conversion into the Beetle doesn't require any crossmember. You just use an adaptor plate and new flywheel. The Subaru motor hangs off the transaxle the same way the VW motor did.

mine is made out of 2" pipe to fit my holden motor!and it is just adapted to fit the VW style engine mounts

I'm guessing most people doing these conversions are pretty handy and would make them themselves.

I wouln't recommend running a subaru engine without a cross brace. The bellhousing will not like it and neither will the rear forks.

I have broken pans with VW engines, the torque and power of a suby will be a lot more. I suggest you at least brace your rear forks.

I made my own, if you are sticking a subie EJ into a kombi you can copy my design, (email or u2u if you like)

Jenny, the EJ20 is a heavy little sucker (~140kg), i sure as hell would be putting something else under it
- there isnt a hell of a lot of thread in those adapter plates either, they are only about 12 mm thick ...

Hmm, guess that's just one more thing I'll have to discuss with the certifier!

Flogging ??? You should see him drive it... so slowwwwww..

The thing that you have to remember is that VW was engineered to handle a 1600TP. Now you look at the kombi and as soon as it went bigger it got a rear crossmember and different mounting points on the transmission. The forces required it. The Stock VW bell housing is just not designed to handle the weight and power.

You may well get away with it, then again you could get away with running naked down the road, doesn't mean it is a smart thing to do.

I have an EA82T Baja in the Shed ATM and it doesn't have a rear cross member it does have more braceing around the KOMBI transmission bell housing though. If you hang an EJ 20 of a type 1 transmission you are asking for trouble .

Sort of but it still isn't helping out the bell housing any. If you are going to run one of them then you would also want two straps on the transmission as well.

Man those things are $$$$ for $275 USD plus postage I would be getting a custom setup made.

Yeah that is the sort of thing. You still need to brace up your rear forks though if you are just going to hand the EJ20 of them.

Have a look in a Subaru and you will see the EJ20 is not designed to hand of just 4 bolts from the block.
