I believe they originated on the Baja Coast in California, Local Surfers wanted to put big tyres on Beetles but they had to cut the Gaurds so the
tyres would fit on. They also found that they had to cut the front and rear aprons off so that they could get up and down the Sand Dunes without
bottoming out. This was so they wouldn't have to walk to the good surfing spots. The Beetles were used because of there ability to drive on the
soft sand.
I read this somewhere but I can't remember where. I'm sure if I'm wrong about 30 people will correct me.
