I dont think the type 3 IRS will fit.
You normally only use the gearbox and the brakes.
Then cheapest way is to get some plates made, PMGBUS has these and fit a beetle box.

Dave, that was for swingaxle type 3 which is up to '69. i have no idea with the type 3 IRS into a bus either. The type 3 swingaxle job is what we're in the midst of doing with Jim's panel.

Well Dave, we've kind hit a flat spot. I'm busy, Jim is busy and I'm still waiting for him to go and get an old square that we know of. He's taken a fair few pics so far but don't take anything that we've done as gospel as we're learning as we go. But when Jim does get around to it, hopefully there shouldn't be too much stuffing around to get it all in but as usual i know there will be. :thumb

OK,

Let me say that I have never straightaxled a split by bolting an early
Type3 rear end in - never tried that particular version.

But I'd still be surprised if the axle tubes
were long enough stock. You need axle
tubes with short end castings but lengthened so they are the same length
as later axle tubes with the long end castings.

Rob, i will know more from first hand experience when jim gets the time to get the parts we need. if you click the link to the flash presentation in my other post, it says that you have to lengthen the axle tubes. I dont claim to know a thing about busses, and i know you know them inside out but we're just gonna have a go with this and see what we can do. :thumb

Steven,

That's cool - when you're done you'll be able to tell me from the basis of experience!

Nobody knows it all and when you think you do you're in trouble!

I was really trying to say I'm making this comment with no foundation in actually having done it myself!

The other rumour is that the type 3 springplates go straight into a splitbus..

Again I'd be surprised but looking forward
to finding out!

regards

Cheers Rob,
Love the pics of the work you've been doing on your ute. :thumb Will have to investigate the springplate theory, will save the modification to the bus ones if its true.

I should clarify a bit. There are a number
of people both in the US and here who have told me that the early swingaxle Type3 rear end actually bolts straight in with no mods...

ie, the springplates go straight in and the existing axle tubes bolt straight up etc etc.

I've never had the opportunity to try it (I have always modified type 1 tubes and bus springplates) and I've always doubted if this is in fact the case. .

But I'd love to know for sure! Be sweet if it did happen to work.

Tubes have to be lengthened 28 mm.

If you have a press pop the endcasting off, add the 28mm grind down and replace end casting (which will cover join) - strongest and neatest. Have to redrill the pin hole.

Alternatively join at top where axle boot will cover join ......

You can always get the adapter plates from pmgbus.
That way you use the normal beetle box and dont have to cut the swing plates.

They allow you to bolt a beetle gearbox to the standard springplates, then you fit early type 3 drums and backing plates, they have a lower shock mount built in and it lowers the rear by about 3 inches.
contact pmgbus for prices.
if you check some of my old posts you will see a pic of them ,
I posted it about 6 months ago.

Cheers
