This is why you dont use cheap filters.....
I full flowed my bus when I rebuilt the T1 engine. I have always changed oil and filter often and had a heap of valvoline filters about and have been
using them. After changing the oil lines the other night from one sort to a heavier duty hydraulic line I started her up, the pump primed and POP.
Cue massive oil spray from under back of the bus. The oil filter had blown the top clean off!

WOW, have only heard of romours of that happening (to type 4 motors) but never seen it!!!
The slots you see are fairly normal in a filter as the steel plate supports the paper filter material.
As you say, make sure you use a good filter, I have been lead to believe the Germans ones can handle higher pressure, but don't really know?
ALSO check the bypass valve and releif valve are not stuck. I'm reasonable sure the 1600TP (like the type 4 motor) has a bypass to prevent over
pressuring of the cooler (& filter in a type 4) when cold.
VERY LUCKY DUDE

Yeah, would have freaked me out I would have thought I may have blown the motor!
Mick Motor's sells the german filters at a very good price, I live at Tweed, but I usually go up every six months or so and buy half a dosen at a
time and store them.

3 weeks ago my filter blew the seal ,
I have used many filters on this full flow system on my Beetle & this is the first time ever had failure.
Mine made strange squirting noise , I looked and thought I had split the case - with all the oil.....not nice when leaving work to go home - little
time to buy parts
Regards,Glenn>

bummer... Good to see everything is cool no tho, dude.
Gene Berg and Stan pobjoy have both touched on the subject of exploding filters in VW motors, over the years. Not nice to see the pics of one tho.

Hardest thing was to get the filter stub off the bloody mount. I got to use a cold chisel and my second favourite hammer.... (evil grin) |
