VW Trends 2nd Dyno day...........believe it or not..........
Just picked up the latest VW Trends magazine, & as most of u on this forum may have figured out, I like talking about big motors, hp & dynos
etc.............I also like comedy, & if u do too I suggets that u get a copy of this magazine, heres some combo's & numbers for u, U can
join the dots.............all the numbers are at the wheels..........
First some street driven cars.
2442cc turbo Karman ghia, 284hp!
2275cc turbo Oval, 336hp!
1776cc Beetle 146hp...............
2332cc Beetle , 200hp
2275cc Turbo Manx buggy, 332hp
1914cc turbo Beetle, 266hp
Then the drag cars are all over the 300hp mark that I can see just from scanning over the article.
Just for some insight, Leighs 2007cc intercooled & injected turbo had 155hp @ the wheels & it was the quickest thing that I've been in.
He also didn't have a huge fan strapped to the intercooler like the only intercooled turbo did in the magazine:kiss whilst on the dyno.
The article makes a good read at least
Jak
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!

The Honda S2000 sports, with VVTi, multiple valves, multi-port injection and an 8500 rpm redline puts out 176 kW from 2 litres (at the flywheel), say
156 BHP at the wheels.....
and yet it is - allegedly - outgunned by even the NA volkswagens.
How does this stuff get written?

Do they have 1/4 mile times to back the power claims up? Are they really BS or are we too slow? I think someone said leighs 155 hp was made at low
rpm, these cars probably make peak power at 7 - 8500 rpm im guessing. Have to get the article. |

Hi
You can read about it here http://www.vwtrendsweb.com/events/0311vwt_dynoday/
Looking at some of the turbo setups, big cams, big turbos and big boost seems to be in vogue, wonder how the street ones drive or how long they
last?

Oh yeh, the turbo Oval with the intercooler was the only one with disk brakes & IRS, the rest had drum brakes & swingaxle................then
they ask, but how did my car just swing violently into the other lane & hit the wall.............
It's not rocket science!
They also bragged that the followed the turbo Oval for at least 30 minutes on the road to the Photo shoot, making it a true street
car...............I'm in stitches!!
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!

Steve,
they would drive like this...
idle up, clutch out, accelerator down.............................................................................................................
wait for it ...............................................................................massive wheelspin for 0.5 seconds, redline, 2nd gear .....
repeat until 4th.
Not Very Streetable I would imagine.

I also picked up my issue yesterday and had a chuckle at the HP figures.....so I went to the tech article on usefull conversion figures expecting to
find one that said if outside the U.S. divide by 2.
Couldn't find such a conversion.....

The 1776 apparently runs 12.8 and a few of the turbo cars are in the tens so they may not be that exaggerated, just very full on race setups. I
wouldnt compare them to a local car built to drive distances. |

Shifty, you have hit the nail on the head dude, you need at least 150hp to run 12's over the 1/4, and 300hp + to run 10's.
But I bet if all these cars left Sydney to drive to nambucca, not many would make it.

I completly agree, that 1776 had 12:1 compression, Probably wouldnt make it to sydney let alone nambucca. Doesnt mean its not a street car though. |

I remember reading an Article by Keith Sueme when he purchased that legendary chop top call look car from the 70's & took it home to England.
It runs 12's with it's 2180 engine. In the states it was getting 180hp @ the wheels, but the most that he could get out of it back in
England was 130hp @ the wheels no matter what dyno he used, & it was still running 12's as well. I know all dyno's are different but
thats alot.
Dave, do u know what yours has at the wheels, from your 13.3 & pulling out of it after the filter hiccup, do u think that your combo would have
150@ the wheels. I reckon the spec of your engine kills that 1776, just on capacity alone. It does have higher compression than yours, but how much is
that really worth?

Jak

Jak,
I have no idea, I will bring it to the dyno day if I get it all back together in time.

i can't remember the details regarding the 1776, but the h.p. numbers on the turbo ghia and the blue chop are definitely legit.
yesterday i shot video of that blue chop running a 10.13@136 mph at carlsbad... despite having 28% leakdown on one cylinder.
since the static c.r. is only 7.8:1, it's fully streetable, and he drives it on a regular basis... he also recently installed aem efi, it's
making way more h.p. than what it was on that trends dyno day mag article. |

Here's the website for one of those cars mentioned (2442 turbo ghia). From the pic on the opening page it looks like he has a bit of power
there.

Apart from the longevity of the motor, I'd hate to have to drive 155hp around town... 110 (see craigs dyno results) or whatever I've got is
hard enough to hang on to when it's wet, and it's way too easy to get used to suddenly going fast. I suppose if it's manageable power
it's okay, but 130 in a 50 zone can't be good. not that I'm that stupid. it's definately time to upgrade my handling:o and brakes...

yup, thats me :-)
mucho props to you aussies, btw, i have seen your jamboree vids, lotta h.p. down under.
here is a post on the clf from turbobobefi.com, regarding that blue chop: "Congrats to you guys for those mega runs on a track that is in need of
repair. Since Scott won Dyno Day 2 at 336 R/W H/P, the new number to do 137 MPH at 1900 lbs.= 374 or 435 fly. He still has 4 more pounds of boost to
go and 36 extra H/P on tap. Next year we will see 141 MPH and high 9's. Not bad for a STREET CAR!" |

300HP Drag Cars? Maybe the turbo cars...Most of the Turbo car were way up on boost.
Most of us N/A Drag cars were below 200HP .... Lee Gong won the N/A class with a 220HP pull...
Just wish some of the "real" Horse Power N/A cars would have shown up. |
