The Count Down to Manx Club Fraser Trip
Well as I walked past my shed on the way to work today I saw a funny site. 2 Manx Buggies both with windscreens, bonnets, fuel tanks, seats and wires
hanging out of them. Then I thought wow in 7 days these bad boys need to be packed and ready to rock and roll.
So for a bit of a laugh I thought I would post up hear each day with the progress. |

7 Nov ...... Both in Bits
Blue Manx - No dash, seats, bonnet, fuel tank, front bumper. Needs a new generator and regulator, broken clutch pedal, 2 broken front leaves in top
pack, new guages going in.
Orange Manx - Wire issues, stuffed alternator, needs rear bars reset, need battery, fuel tank leaks, fuel pump stuffed, front brackets need to be put
on. Few other problems to sort.
Let the games begin. |

Well after a productive day....... Just finished up on the Orange manx. All systems are go and she runs like a kitten. New alternator will go in
tommorrow along with teh fuel pump and battery. All the wiring is fixed and even had time to bolt on some spot lights. So I would say dazza is a safe
starter.
My blue manx ..... well it now occupies 3 bays in my shed and hasn't seen much progress at all. The seats, tank, wiring , and a few other things
are still out and I have just finised welding up the new clutch pedal. Hopefully by COB tommorrow she will be driving again. Needless to say it will
be a long day. Oh well such is teh price we pay for changing things at the last minute..
Buggy on !!!! We will make it yet......:bounce |

Well, mine's all ready to go as always, but I am looking at welding up some 16 inch rims so I can chuck some cheap off road tyres on so the sand
will be easier going for me this time. I can't find any second hand 15 inch tyres around here but there's heaps of 16 inchers liing
around...
So yeah, I'm "good to go", but if I get these luggier tyres on, I'll be "gooder to go" I guess...

Monday 11 Nov 02
Well a big Sunday was had by all.
The Orange Manx was all done and Dazza just had a few things to finish off. He took it away to put a new alternator in. Later I found out he had but
the damn thing didn't work.mmmm brand new out of teh box. Oh well the engine will be comming out again and a new one will be fitted. Finishing
off still to do. Time is getting tight.
Blue manx - Finished off the wiring put the pedals back, dash back in, bonnet on, bars on, lights on. All works. No charge though. Changed regulators,
no change. Damn it, shroud off, new alternator in. Beautiful 13.9V.... getting there. Noticed the carb was pissing out fuel from its shaft. Dragged
out a new one, that didn't work. Rebuilt the carb. Bolted her on... runs a little rich, needs smaller jets... Oh well at least she is running.
Getting there a few lat nights ahead..
Time is getting real tight now... 4 days time crunch time. Better warm up the turd
She'll be right... |

Tuesday 12 Nov 02
Well another productive evening...... The Blue manx was running real hot so I decided it needed a guage. Drilled an tepped the block, installed a VDO.
Yep she needs more fuel. Pulled the carb again and checked out the mains #120 mmm better go to #130. Did that and it made a difference. Nor quite
happy so I took it apart and redrilled it to a #135, now we are talking. Played around with some other stuff and finally went for a drive. mmmmm
buggy in the rain.. better get the top on next. Then the Orange Manx returned, still having problems with teh Brand New Alternator. 20 minutes later
all was well, she pushes out 13V with 600watts of head lights on, jumps to 13.9 when you turn off the IPF's. Not to bad for a 55 amp alternator.
Decided to give her a temp guage while I was into drilling sumps. Orange one ready to go ...
Back to the Blue One - replaced the bowden tube in the hope of removing clutch shutter, worked so far I think.
Well 3 days to go and it is looking much better now. Both Manx's run , charge and are ready to hit the beach. Well almost but you get the
idea.....
Looks like the turd will not be needed after all :thumb:thumb |

Nah it may break, more fun sorting it on teh run to Fraser. I am planning on pulling the wheel bearings out tonight and repacking them along with the
CV's.
Apart from that I am sure the big bore 1500 and beetle IRS box will do one more trip. That is unless the floor pan breaks in half. Oh well it is
booked in for a rebuild over christmas. |

Getting close now, dropped in on a few mates lats night and saw them packing their buggies......
The Orange manx - has gone for good I hope.
Blue one is going, runs at 75 degrees on the road. Runs a little rough but what the hell. Drove it to work today got here and she was pissing out oil from the new alternator mount, damn
crappy gaskets.. Oh well pull her off again tonight and put on a new one with some goo.
Had a few calls from other buggy people and numbers are looking good at about 25 Buggies / Baja and 5 or so 4wd's so it is looking like a great
weekend.
As for Daz67 and his hours ... why would you need em you seem to have everyone else working quite well in the wee hours on the night ..

Sometimes I don't know what all you guys are going on about, especially Brad... My buggy is just one of our regular cars, a daily driver, drive
it to work everyday and use it to fetch parts and attend to breakdowns...
So for me, I just chuck the tent, box of food and myself in the car on Saturday morning and drive out to Inskip... Oh, and Robert's ya
Mother's nephew's Dad...
Nothing to it eh...:bounce

Well the fan is out and fixed, altenatot pedastal is off and I will resurface it today, seems it is a littl croocked.
Yeah my buggies are usually reliable and always get me home so I can't complain. Just that this one is waiting for some attention which
didn't get time to occure before Fraser.
47 hrs and counting ..... |

Have a great weekend Brad. You deserve it mate. Anyone who works as hard as you do not only for this forum, the new Manx Club and Oz Volkswagenism in
general needs a fun filled break.
Take heaps of pics, don't hassle to many of Queenslands pretty ladies and make sure the beer stays cold.
I personally look forward to meeting you when your down next year and have already bought a calendar to list important VW dates because I hate hearing
about how much fun you all get up too. Next year I wanna be there.

Yes, it certainly was a good weekend. Even with the bad weather I think it was a great turnout and everybody seemed to have a ball.
I enjoyed it immensely and think that those that didn't turn up due to the weather situation missed out big time. I mean, what's torrential
rain and gale force winds to a guy doing maybe a bit more than 80 kp/h down the beach in an open buggy...
The race through the sand tracks on Sunday night left me with a bent front end (I had to go and hit the biggest hole at the fastest speed, but
that's me...) but it's fixed now and I didn't let it slow me down too much. I checked everything over and discovered I'd bent my
chassis forks too, leaving the doghouse an extra 1/2 inch from the body, very cool because the rotten thing has always touched because it was too
close. So now my motor has the proper clearance and my front end has just the amount of negative camber I always wanted (identical both sides too). So
after hosing the buggy inside and out, it actually came back better that it went out...
All I had to do was rebuild the regulator (in the big tent on Sunday morn), adjust the R/H tie rod to align the steering again, adjust the gear lever
(Monday morn), and clean it and it's better than before.
On the way back around the bottom while the tide was still fairly high, I offered to follow some guys in a 'Cruiser that was low on fuel, since I
had radio, phone and a car with plenty of fuel... Sure enough they ran out about 3 km from the ferry where their friends were, and would have left
without them because they didn't know they were coming back with them. So I gave one of them a lift and all was fine for them. He said he always
wanted to buy a buggy or at least get a ride in one, and commented that it rode much smoother and went a lot faster than the 'Cruiser, and maybe
they should have come over in buggies... He had a grin from ear to ear and just went on and on to his mates about it.
Anyway, I'm sending a copy of my photos down to Brad tomorrow so he can use any that he thinks are OK on our web site. I'll also put a link
on here to a page with some of them on I reckon.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I also broke my "gearbox" on the trip... This doesn't sound good does it... And it's not good, I
have to find another "box for my gear" for next time. Big splits up the plastic after doing a nasty little jump for Wes to take a pic of,
but he missed it... Bloody waste of a good "gearbox", but it was still fun.
Anyway, I think I've gone on enough now...
Buggy on...
