how do you like your rats?

Although a controversial choice of sustenance, rats are very underrated and often overlooked when it comes to impressing the guests at the classic dinner party. Many people believe they are dirty and disease-carrying, and the truth is they probably are, but if you dropped round to your mates place on a Sunday and the menu included Ratburgers I doubt you'd forget the experience in a hurry.

Today we are going to eat rats. For this recipe you will need:

7 medium to large sized sewer rats
a colander (for a quick rinse)
7 kilos of salt
4 schooners of methylated spirits or lighter fluid
a ball of string (jute is fine)
14 red marbles
2 cups extra virgin olive oil
300g pickled jalapenos
1 stomach pump
1 500g pack of cornflakes

Firstly, run the rats under hot (not boiling) water in the colander for no more than a few seconds each; remember we have to be careful not to destroy the delicate flavour. Drink one schooner of your methylated spirits/lighter fluid, and in the meantime combine the salt and string with a brisk stirring motion in a 10-12 litre saucepan. once the salt and string is well mixed, pour two schooners of your chosen white spirit in with the oil and jalapenos. Get this mixture good and hot and piff all seven rats in from across the kitchen. Don't stand too close, especially if you're using a gas burner. By this time you should be ready for your second glass of lighter fluid. Put the lid on and burn vigorously for approximately two hours. when you come to, turn off the heat and add just enough water to separate the rats from each other, and serve on a bed of lettuce and cornflakes. with luck the cooking process will have opened their eye sockets enough to replace the eyes with red marbles.
Sit back on your beanbag and enjoy :D This is one dinner party your friends will be talking about for a long time:thumb

Please feel free to post other delicious and unusual 'ratcipes' here so we can all rediscover the joy of eating RATS.
:thumb:D

Norwegan rats are far tastier than the common black rat.

Something to do with their lazier attitude - maybe a bit of fat marbling?

Do you skin them or just shave them?

Yeah that's what I was wondering. I hate hair in my mouth so I would have to do something. Do you think an apple peeler would do the trick or would it be too messy?

Just put them in a tumbler and let the friction between them run the hair off...

Just like peeling potatoes in bulk.

Depends if you like them raw or not Wes

Ir raw then the apple pealer is the best method.
If cooked the best method is to thread a piece of wire through the rat and hang in front of an exhaust pipe. Wind the mixture screw "WAY" out. Pump pedal 5 time then start. Takes hair AND skin off in no time.
Weber Progresive powered cars are by far the best for this

"I hate hair in my mouth" - i know exactly what you mean Wes. Noting worse! :P

See any rat except the stumpy tailed Gilligans Island rat is purpose built to be deep fried. Batter if you like, season with herbs and spices to suit the main course...?? boots slow roasted in sump oil.

The beauty is you can all keep hold of the tail as in fondue style. Dont let go!;)

modern cuisine

usually after a couple of hours burning in lighter fluid on a stove there is little hair left, so the hair is not a problem; if, however, you prefer a rarer treat coat the rats liberally with Veet for 30 mins and then give them a quick searing in a blistering hot wok with peanut oil and a dash of redex. sewer rats are used for this recipe mainly for their availability, although in a pinch you can use cute little mice from a pet shop. but they're small and you would have to use twice as many, as well as the fact that they aren't as tasty (or gamey) :D

I got a hold of a few Malaysian Wet Rats, but after purchase realised they were only good for mincing.

So Chili Bur-rat-o's it is, washed down with some Cold Coronas and Lemon.

Damn Fine.

The unfortunate thing is that a couple of weeks ago on Foxtel on one of those many channels, there was an outdoor restaurant in Asia that specialised soley on rats. They were raised specifically for eating and were apparently clean.

As opposed to the one's we disected at school, which look to have been raised for mating.

I'll stick to having my rats in the kitchen...."there's a rat in the kitchen what am I gonna do....wo wo wo yeah....wo wo yeah". UB40 for those who give a toss.

Crazy people

I bet most of you couldn't REALLY tell the difference getwen a gilligans or a siberian, OR a sewer rat. when properly presented and prepared, they really do taste very similar, although the density of the flesh and the stringiness of the tails differs. don't eat the spleen. really.
