ej20t is the turbo ej20. i believe it is the 2l variant of the WRX motor. as far as i am concerned it is what VW would have done if they were still building flat 4s. loads of torque and horses, reliable, compact, but watercooled.

hi the ej20t is a subaru 2 litre flat four turbo. the motor is found in the WRX.
its around 160kw or 210hp standard so thats y they are awesome.
as for ur 1600 question you can take it as far as your wallet will allow and there are many top engine builders for them in this country.
the main reason people use the subaru motor or any other for that matter is simply horsepower vs the dollar.
e.g. $2500 for a ej20t = 210hp
$2500 for a vw aircooled flat four will not get you anywhere near that hp

They were based on vw motors, but had no vw parts. The speedway motors were generally scat or autocraft aftermarket serious $$$ motors.

$2500 would be lucky to get you a rebuilt 50HP stock vw motor.

Sorry to disagree with you Wes, Subaru is not based on VW flat 4. Fuji heavy industries, makers of subaru, used to build Jowett cars in Japan under licence to UK co (like Datsun used to do with British motor corp, british leyland). Obscure pommie make from 40's 50's. These had flat 4 watercooled engines back then. Subaru have since refined the concept more than a little. I have seen a Jowett Javelin (sportie type) and jowett Jupitor sedan when I was a kid. You know how datsun Bluebird (early stuff) and 120Y engines are based on BMC A series (morris minors and small austins etc( direct bolt in i think)
well same thing applies

yeh....as in early sprint carts...

but stilll...why is it so expensive to do a 1600? couldn't u supercharge one to get horsepower?? i mean...technically u should be able to fit 2 of them shouldnt you?? but just for the sake of it...one small one...

Im with Wes on this. To make serious power with 30's technology = more serious $$$

Enter current 70 year later technology of ongoing refinement of those old ideas and you have bang for buck that is hard to beat.

There has been very few 'modern' ideas though. Mostly older patents/ideas that now work with modern alloys, ceramics and technology.

You will find many polarised views though :vader

Personally I would love to drop a scooby rex engine in my bus but it would be mutton dressed as lamb and the engine would be the most valuable bit of the whole thing.
