import duty on car bits

I'm looking at bringing in a few parts out of the US. What rate does customs charge on car parts, I've heard anywhere from 5 - 20%. Anyone had recent experience??

15% duty + 10%GST on new parts I think.

Spyder-WISD 07-09-05 11.6s @ 125 MPH

Speedster-WISD Nats 05 14.4s @ 89 MPH

Jet cruiser-Coogee 22-09-05 900 deg C @ 110,000 rpm

In my experience it seems that if the parts declared value is under around US$150 I haven't been hit with duty. Above that (not sure of exact amount) and I've been stung (15% + GST). It helps to have a friend who can send it over with a "revised" declared value :D

Thanks guys, I'll see if I can get a doctored invoice sent with the parts, otherwise I'll cop the extra. I'm spending about $700 AUS including shipping, do they charge duty on the shipping cost or just GST??

I believe it is duty first then gst on the landed price

IF the combined value is under $50 it is waived

I think there is also a clause where a 30 yr old car doesnt attract duty

If you want to ask specific questions and get the correct information it is best to get it from Customs, just send them an Email and they will tell you what the regulations are and what you want to know.
