Golde Steel Sunroof
Picked up a Golde Steel slider sunroof from a '66 and are grafting it into my '56.Does any body have any info like service manuals or a
parts diagram for one? It was siliconed closed, but have got it working OK,but I think a small part is missing that keeps the cables tightly into mesh
with the drive gear.Have made up a small shim from steel plate which does the job,but would like to reproduce what ever was original-hope someone can
help.

I keep looking at the pages of ragtop stuff and can't figure it out....:o
Then I need someone to fit it...I'd be better getting someone who does them all the time...?
Does the Sunroof place here in Melbourne have Golde &/or Britax? What's you one N?

Jenz-I tried for a long time for sunroof places here in Adelaide to get me a new Rag Top,but were unable to source one anywhere in Aus. One place used
to supply and fit Britax ones but couldn't find anything thru'his contacts.I then decided to buy one O.S. and found a place in the UK with
new ones but they have press studs down each side on the outside to stop it flying open while mobile.Another in the US has a direct copy of the
original and I found from a US Forum that many people who had fitted them had them fly open at speed doing a lot of damage to paint work.So I gave up
on the idea until I found this steel slider. The parts list you see on Wolfburgs site is basically for all the parts that wear out-you would still need
to find an original to get the frame which goes around the hole to keep everything stable and for strength. You would probably find that the plastic
guides and the canvas would need to be replaced which is what they have.Good luck with your search. There is actually a Beetle here with a rag top
parked in a shed, but the bloke won't part with it.The body is rusted out beyond any hope of repair and he says he will restore it one day,and its
been there for 8 years that I know of.

Jen, The Golde roofs were a factory thing. The roof is cut and folded in a way, that cant be done in a kit. The best thing to do is find a Donor car
get the roof cut out, and weled into your roof. You might even find a complete roof section, that only needs new uph. Ring around the vw mechanics,
Im sure one of then would have one...

Generally they cut out around the roof section, So really like cutting for a real big Sunroof, then weld the section in, So its not that hard. Really
not harder than putting in a britax. I didnt worry about it, cause mines a factory one, but their are a few guys and gals who have got this done.
AUstralian VW perfomance will be able to do this...
Good luck, and let us know how you go.

I just looked at the Sunroof Centre's web site...do you have to ask for the canvas sunroofs...they only had modern electric ones on the site..

Jen dont do it. It will devalue the car. It will cost about as much as doing a "real one. YOur going to repaint it anyway, you might aswell do it
As original as possible.
Just my 2c.

Jenz-I've lost it somehow-did you want a Rag or a Steel one? No one does a steel replacement because no modern car has the same roof profile as
the old Beetles. The 2 German Companies that made the original 2 styles of sunroofs for VW's are still going today(Golde and Webasto) but they
have nothing available. As I said,Repo Rags are available, but are of suspect quality,so an original is the only real option. The Rags are a far easier
one to graft into your body, but still need a good panel beater to do the job.Ther was a steel slider for sale on this forum last week in Tassie that
went real cheap. If you find an original and have it fitted properly,I though it would add value to your car-thats what I was hoping for with mine.

Finding an Original roof and fitting it will bring up the value of your car. BUt getting a britax or similar, will lower the value of the car. With
jens car it would have to be a 2 fold rag sunroof, as that is what was offered way back then.
