Re Chroming Wheels

Just wondering if anyone has done this?
Recently there was a post concerning the rechroming of wheels. Did the author get it done? how much was it? and how did they turn out?

Silver,

I just had my 356 wheels dechromed by Astor Metal Finishers in Fairfield. 2 wheels for $100. Mr Clean in padstow will blast and powdercoat for about $35 a wheel.

I would of liked to rechrome my 356 wheels but stripping cutting chroming rewelding them would of cost me half what the cars worth, and 356's had painted wheels as standard anyway.

Cheers

Steve

The quote was verbal over the phone here on Sunshine Coast... I think he was just trying to scare me off.
But one of the forum sponsors:

at three hundred dollars a wheel, thats 1200 dollars, so your 356 cost you 2400. I'll double your money and give you $5000 for it. and a slab of beer

It is expensive though, I was quoted more than that, from memory, which is why I never got the wheels I wanted :(

So, let me get this straight.

If I want to get my VW std steel wheels chromed, do they have to be split?

I thought I could just take them to a chromer (in Lismore) and get them stripped and chromed.

:jesus

Just got off the phone to Winkler & Patrick in Lismore.

They said they have the wheels split as well, because there are some spots on wheels that after chroming as a complete wheel will start to rust over time. They used to do wheels complete a while ago but have since found out about the problem.

$160 for ea rim to split on a lathe, strip and chrome, and re-weld from behind.
