Porsche G50 gearbox? SOLD IT TO A PORSCHE GUY

Has anyone here had anything to do with Porsche G50 gearbox, e.g. what are they worth, and how hard are they to put into a bus, I can get my hands on one very cheap and am toying with the idea of it going into the kombi.

unless your planning to put this kinda hp through your bus, I think it would be a slight over kill? Then there’s the cost of one! Tho if you really want a 5 speed and it has to be Porsche… then a 915 would probably be the go. Surely strong enough for a holden v6 and a sh.t load cheaper?

My 2 cents :)

the G50's are the pick of the bunch as far as tuff box's go. That said however they are 1) extreamly long, you will definatly have to cut the torsion tube to fit it in. 2) Super expensive to service (try 900 a gear :( ) hmmm they also have the shifter on the base of the box so a new shift mechanism would be needed. I have only ever seen one put in a bug (Reubs). As Dan said get yourself a 915, they are similar in size to an 091 as as far as vw power goes I'm sure you won't break one :) Hey if you decide to pass up on the box due to the stuffing around involved u2u me as I have already taken to my torsion tubes with the air saw :)

Reub had a G50 in his VWRX (see post in here somewhere).

Here are some pics to show you how big the G50 is;

You can see it's a long way through the torsion tubes.

G50...Big bucks, big balls!

If your gonna run big power/torque then the G50 is a nice trans (if a little exy!). I do know a guy that has one in a Transporter but he's running a supercharged SVX in it too! 450hp+! He got tired of trashing his 915's everytime he hit the back straight a Hockenhiem......That corner will do that!

The Renault R30 type box I'm using hangs over the torsion tube too, but it literally hangs OVER the tube. no removal of the tube necessary! and it's as strong as the G50 from what I have been told. slightly cheaper, but unfortunately rarer here :(

I have so far only had to remove the metal plate the clutch tube passes thru on the top of the torsion tube.

See...It depends on who you talk to!
One guys says the Reno box is good another says they are s%$t! One guy says the G50 is the ducks nuts and another says you can't fit it.

Ok...Now it's choice time!...

Some say the Reno box is hard to find and getting 'long in the tooth'. Parts are getting hard to find, but the diff is the same size as FORD 9"! The cost of a rebuild is about the same as buying a G50 with the correct shifter & gate.

Porsche transaxles are available and the G50/50 is the best of'em. If you want ratios or and LSD, just check the part numbers, most of the G50's had something special in them...I have the part codes here somewhere!

For my bucks I'd go Porsche, though maybe not the G50 (I'm poor!). For a number of reasons:
1. You can actually get them here in Oz.
2. You can get all the extra bit locally too.
3. There is a vast local knowledge about them.
4. And the design is still in production.

My 2 bobs worth.

if you can get a rebuilt G50 for the same price as a rebuilt Renault UN1, then yes, the G50 would be the go because they are slightly more common, as people such as Swan and ASV bring them in themselves, or take them from local wrecks. they still arent common though. (porsche sell like 100 cars a year here)

a UN1 is about 100 pounds to buy from the UK but then you have to get it brought over, the freight is the killer.

Remember, I'm also going on what others have said about the renault box, I haven't finished my project yet to know for sure if anything said is true.

oh yeah, the G50 is circa '85 isnt it? UN1 box came out in the '83 R25 and was used in the R25, R25 turbo, R30, audi 100 and renault vans and AFAIK stopped making them mid 90's. "long in the tooth" is a pretty dumb thing to say about them when comparing with 80's porsche stuff that's probably well hammered by previous owners.

The basic G50 first appeared in 1991 and the last G50 was produced last year I think....The current transaxles would problably fit too. Don't get insulted here mate......The Reno box is good...I have been a transporter and a race buggy, both with the Reno box and they are very nice....

Just the Porsche transaxles can be found for good dollars if you know where to look.....A mate in NZ bought one for $1700NZ with the shifter & gate. And his has ratios' & LSD....It can be done.

fair enough. I doubt that the renault box would still cost more than the porsche one though.

I recieved this on my enquiry:
"Hi James

Thank for your email. Unfortunately we do not have a G50 in stock and at
this stage I am unsure when we may get another. A non LSD will normally
start around $5000 when they are available.

Regards

Bob Naylor
Director
Swan Porsche Parts"

So if you can find them for the $800 the UN1 box would probably cost, then I'd probably try and buy 10 of them. They certainly don't sound too common to me.

But if one turned up for around the grand mark, I'd buy it as I wouldnt have to make a bellhousing like I do with the UN1 :)

What is the serial number of the box?

This can be used to determine the year and gear box ratios contained within.
