Pics of my kombi bed setup
Someone in another thread asked for pics of bed setups, so here's mine. I've put this in a thread of it's own so people don't
have to download these pics every time they read the other thread ( http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=14333 ).
It took me exactly one minute to do the conversion from bench seat to bed, it's really easy (even if the explanation of how it works is long and
complex). Then I did it again slowly taking pics to demostrate how it works.
1. The bench seat. There's a large storage space underneath, you just lift the bottom cushion to get to it.
2. Take out the two cushions. The cushions are made from blocks of foam with cotton covers (with full-length zips for easy removal). Under/behind
the cushions are two plywood panels that just lift out.
3. Lift out the two panels. Now you can see the large storage area underneath the seat. There are also three storage drawers that will be pulled out
to hold the bed up. Just below the drawers there is a narrow shelf that's got the metal bed frame and legs (you'll see more of them later)
and also has other stuff like the jack and wheelbrace and the awning poles. The rear area (over the motor) has a third large cushion.
4. There are two metal washers sunk flush into the wooden floor with holes in the middle. These will accept bolt heads that protrude from under the
bed legs to prevent the legs from slipping sideways.
5. The bed frame has two metal legs that just slot into the bottom of a horizontal frame. The frame is covered with black carpet (don't ask me
why). The frame has guides for the drawers.
6. Now you can see how the drawers pull out and get supported by the legs/frame. The drawers have bolts that limit them from coming out any further.
They also have latch things that fix them to the frame.
7. The two panels from the bench seat fit perfectly over the drawers to make a solid platform. The panel at the front has little extra bits of wood on
the underside that stop it sliding forward off the bed (and also stop it sliding forward when it's a bench seat). The whole platform is now
solid as a rock: it's can't be shifted at all. The cupboard under the sink has doors that slide towards the back of the bus behind the
woodwork so you can still get to it.
8. The two seat cushions fit perfectly over the platform, along with the big cushion at the back over the motor. A standard size double bed fitted
sheet fits perfectly over all the cushions and stops them from moving apart while you... you know!

I can't claim credit for most of the design, it was already in the Kombi when I bought it (that's basically why I bought a Kombi with as
many mechanical problems as it had and then paid to get them fixed).
But I have made a few modifications of my own. The sliding doors on the cupboard under the sink are mine (the original doors opened outwards and so
that cupboard was blocked when the bed was up), the top cupboard at the very back on the driver's side is all mine (it matches the original
carpentry and also has sliding doors), I added the bolts/washers that hold the bottom of the bed's legs in place, and I put in the latches that
hold the drawers to the bed frame (previously the drawers were held in by bolts that you had to screw in with a spanner, which took ages). I've
also added an internal water tank in what was previously dead space, and done a heap of rewiring, and... I could go on, suffice to say I've been
having a lot of fun!

Very nice setup!
I'm assuming that the drawers slide back on top of the engine bay... Does this raise the height of the bed? How long does it take to get to the
top engine hatch with the seat set up? I'm assuming you stuff the metal frame under the seat when it's not in use?

Yes the drawers slide back on top of the engine, and yes it does mean that the bed is a bit higher. The drawers can also be accessed/slid out the
back door!

It fits neatly on the little shelf just under the drawers and above the big storage space.
