aluminium welding

I need to have my inlet manifold modified and I only have a stick welder. I rang a couple of local mobile welders and have been quoted $80 for first hour then $50/hr after that for alluminium welding. Does that sound reasonable?

If I have to take the car to a shop then I need to factor in the cost of the trailer.

Expensive Aluminium Welding --

I wouldn't say that was reasonable Jen, but I did expect it to be EXPENSIVE as its not an easy thing to do and I presume You need a special welder etc.... it looks like You are up for a bit of money... its probably only a 5 minute job too.. I'd keep asking around until You find the cheapest.... or at last someone realistic with their prices, also ask if they could go to Your car to do the job.... Can't hurt asking, as many welders are set up on a truck or a trailer for times like this.... cheers
Have a Merry Christmas Jen.. Lee

That is reasonable for a mobile welder. I would ask if he is using tig or a mig as tig alloy welding is much better, Can you take it of as there is a good welder that works near Autobarn in Moss st In the side street there. He is very reasonable. i take all my alloy welding to him . I am a boilermaker/welder myself but this guy is far better at welding alloy it then me:( as it is what he specializes in.

when I've cracked my aluminium engine cage before, I have taken it to a boat repair / modification shop. There are heaps about and most small boats are aluminium so they are all set-up and ready to go. I got two side engine cage bars rewelded for $25.

Hi Andy,
can you please give me the details of that welder at Slacks Creek.

It will be a very tight fit between the throttle body and the firewall, so I'd preferr if it were done with the car there. I bought a 70mm diameter 90 degree bend ($76.50!!) but it is not tight enough and will need mitre cutting and welding. We have our own engineering workshop where I work, but our guys don't do any alloy stuff.
