Is it worth the time and money?
Hi i am a newbie here and i am a newbie kombi fan.
Im really interested in buying a old kombi and doing it right up, you know, new engine new interior, paint job, mags, and the rest....
i need to know if anyone can tell me is it worth me buying one with a decent engine already in it or should i get a reco one put in it.
Alsohow much am i gunna have to expect to pay for the original kombi before i start. and is there anyone that can tell me how much they have paid to
get a new paint job on a kombi and also what year would be the best to do up. I like to look of the ones without the 2 windows at the front..
I have seen some really nice done up kombis on this forum and i really am looking forward to doing one myself, if some of you guys can give me some
info and tips
thanks heaps...

hi and welcome! :P
I suggest you join the local club and talk to some people first hand.
A bit hard over the key board.
The model you are talking about is a pre 67. A splittie.
The dearest to do up.
Mechanicals are the least of the worries. Rust and body work are the $$$$ eaters.
Reco motors are around $3 to $4k.
Rust .... well... start multipling.
Paint.... anywhere from $1500 for a blow over to ..... well $10k for a 2 pak show jobbie is not uncommon.
A done up one can be had from $15k to ...... $40 or $50 for a 23 window in mint condition.
That said you could get a road worthy one for ......... say $5k?? IF you look and wait. A friend has bought a done up 66 with all seats and .. yeah
done up for under $20k.
TAKE YOUR TIME and the perfect one WILL come along.
How much work can you do yourself
You can get a REALLY nice bay (68 to 79) for less. My 82 air cooled is even less.
