Kombi Q's
Hey peoples....
I dont know alot about kombi's and was hoping u guys could fill me in on a little info.
I am a bit of a beetle man....Beetles hold a certain class that u cant get driving any other car. The dilema is they are small...i want space and a
toe bar:o
So i am interested in getting myself a kombi (still got that class....and space) but i know next to nothing about em (noobie u could say). So i am
hoping someone could give the low down. I am after a reliable, not too rare (splitties out of the question) kombi.
What models (yrs) are good.
What to look out for when getting one
what is good bad etc.
All info appricated:thumb
Thanks
sooty

check the bolts and bolt holes that the rear seats go into.
Make sure that you take it to a good mechanic for an inspection before you buy it.

i believe 74 to 77 are good years we have 3 kombies a 74 -1.8ltr, 76 - 2ltr and a 73 with a 2ltr (originally probably a 1.6ltr).
they have all been modified as they passed from owner to owner. Kombies in good original condition ie. 1 or 2 owners are rare and command a high
price. all our kombies needed work when purchased the 74 needed a reco gearbox the 76 needed a motor and gearbox rebuild after 25,000 km the 73 came
with a 1600 (to low geared for highway cruising) gearbox now has a 2ltr gearbox, they all needed tune ups and replacing things such as airfilters
spark plugs points etc, the 74 needs some rust work done to the rear floor pan the 76 needs rust work here and there not major, but they didn't
cost much. the 74 cost $800 it had new tires, good suspension and steering and 40mm drla dellortos the 76 was abandoned cost $300 the 73 is a full
camper we swapped an old landcruiser for it. If you are going to pay lots of money for one take it to a good vw mechanic and ask him to do a FULL
inspection of the mechanicals, brakes, steering, gearbox noises, compression test and general inspection of the motor, make sure the motor and gearbox
match, ie 2lt motor and 2lt gearbox, ( there are people and dealers around who will rip you off) plus have a good look underneath for rust in the
cross members, floor etc, other than that not much to say but GOOD LUCK in your search
