Spare wheels ????

I have been thinking about the wheels on my Baja and baja kombi. As yet i don't have proper wheels so am starting to think about the setup.

A normal car has 4 wheels and a spare generally all the same size.

Most bajas buggies beach kombis have larger rear tyres than front.

Question is what size spares do you carry????
same as the rear tyres or the front ones. Obviously the rear won't fit on the front very well but the front will fit on the rear no worries.

Do you take 1 of each?

Very confused!!!

fit 4 the same size tyres :D
(I have 215/75R15's. Fit front & rear no worries without mods).

Seriously though, not sure. On a buggy you can survive on 3 tyres as long as both rear are OK. I don't think you can get away with this on a Kombi.

Take a repair kit and pump?

well I have owned my Baja nearly 9 years, and never got a flat. I don't carry a spare, only a pyrol pump (tyre repair can of goo).

I used to carry a spare the same size as the front, but just don't bother these days. I might again one day if I figure out where to fit a spare.

Funnily in the length of time I have owned my baja I have had a fuel pump, ignition coil and spark lead die while on a run, but not a tyre. Yet most people carry spare tyres but not spare engine parts.

As I have family near Stockton I just carry a stock VW tyre (Thanks Sam) on the roof rack. When I'm out on the dune I just leave it by the tent. It needs air every couple of days and is piece of mind when travelling 4 - 5 hours home on a Sunday evening with work the next morning. Just pump it up before I go.

I too have never needed to repair a tyre on the Dog. The day will come when I stake one (or a student does it for me)and just want somthing round to limp home on slow like.

Spare tyre, what spare tyre?

On small road trips I take the spare tyre in a can.

For long trips I take two tubes of each tyre size as well as a patch repair kit. I also take an exhaust jack and tools to remove the wheel. The only thing that I don't have yet is the bead breaker.

But all that said, the buggy has done 25,000km with out a flat, it will probably happen on the first trip out that I don't take all this stuff with me.

Cheers guys thanks for the help

so a repair kit, can of goo should be good enough.

Why then do you hear people on 4wd treks blowing tyres heaps. Is it because the cars are heavier or they go on longer rougher safaries.

On the Paris Dakar they seemed to be blowing tyres all the time, the trucks and bikes as well?

i know when we took the old merc coupe down the oodnadatta track we blew 2 tyres. one was shredded but that was a street car.

Andy do you take the Kombi on the beach? and if so do you have any problems. I'd like to keep the kombi as standard as possible. ie not cut any guards etc.

I haven't heard of a buggy or Baja killing an off road tyre. Maybe because of the lighter weight the tyres aren't stressed as much.

You must remember that a loaded 4WD would weigh 2 or 3 tons, maybe more, and we're quite offen running on the same tyres.

A word of warning on the tyre goo for people with tubless tyres.
It makes a mess and effectively bonds the tyre to the rim.
Never used it personally, even though I always used to carry it with me on the motor bike, until a bike tyre shop showed me the results of using it. Sure it gets you out of a bind, but the fix up can be very expensive afterwards. It can also put your wheel very out of balance, so keep the speed down!

Like I said, never used it my self, but use it with CAUTION.

I haven't seen a proper offroad tyre damaged on a baja or buggy. The good mud tyres, both BFG and goodyear MTR have very good sidewalls.

yes the difference with 4wd's is their weight.

On club trips I have seen a few flats. Dyno staked a front tyre on the sand. Someone went straight through the sidewall and ripped a big hole in it. But the tyre wasn't a good offroad tyres, it was a weird looking rally style tyre.

Some others have gotten flats for no apparent reason on the sand, I think mainly from running too low a pressure and getting crap in between the bead and the rim. I know Mike Sharp did this at Stockton when I was there, ran low pressures and hit a grass clump while cornering hard in the back of a dune. The grass got stuck between the rim and the bead.

I carry a spare tube and tyre levers when I go on big trips on the motorbike.
