T4 motor Q's


Just a few questions for starters as I have just changed from my trusty old T1 dp kombi to a flash new T4 motored Kombi and I am still trying to work out the different motors. My initial questions are:

a. I have installed Kadrons (off of my old beast) on modified manifolds to fit onto my 1800 T4 motor- will the jets sizes be suitable. I am currently making up the linkages but it starts and seems to run alright whilst sitting in my driveway!

b. I have also put a electric fuel pump on which is located above the level of the fuel tank/fuel hose connector- will the pump pull the fuel into the carbies or will it only pump whilst the level in the tank is higher than the pump?

c. Is it worth putting an electronic ignition/points system in my 009 dizzy. How much are they and where do you get them and what type of coil do you need to match to them for maximum spark?

d. I have got electric oil temp and pressure guages can I run them both off a T piece from the where the current oil sender switch is and if so will the oil temp be accurate (or close to as I don't know where else to mount it.)

Any help with these questions (and the no doubt thousand more to follow is greatly appreciated)

Your kadrons will run fine and the standard jetting should be ok for an 1800 engine, I have a mate who runs Kadrons on a 2ltr engine and it goes very well.

Not sure about the fuel pump, I would run it below the tank, the pump won't have to work as hard, and will prime quicker.

Eletronic points are great and worth the expense, try Vintage Vee Dub supplies or Mick Motors, they should be able to help.

You can run your pressure gauge with a tee piece with the oil light switch, but you need to run the oil temp in the sump, there is a plate on the bottom of a T4 engine, not the strainer plate but the other one!. That should be easy to fit, and the reading should be close.

Dave's got it pretty right!!
You can also get a replacement dip stick to measure oil temp.
For more info on the electronic ignition and the 009 dissy do a seach of the old posts, some interesting reading.

An electric fuel pump may overpower the carbs' float bowl valves and flood the carbs. Putting in a pressure regulator might fix this. Otherwise the stock fuel pump is fine - so long as it's in good condition.

I had a brass T-piece on my Beetle engine for the gauge pressure sender as well as the stock pressure switch. It was too short when I tried to use it on my Type 4 engine. You will have to machine up a longer brass fitting, at least 100mm long, as it must come up through the shrouding before you can screw any fittings to it. It's also very close to the distributor so be careful to mount the pressure sender facing away or it will foul. This sort of fitting is MUCH easier with the engine out! I also found teflon thread tape was necessary to make the fittings absolutely oil tight.
