Spot on

135's up front,155's at the back,Drums all round and no bumpers--that's never done it for me.We were doing up Beetles in the late 60's,early 70's with big mag wheels(7x14's-big back then, but same width at each corner) with wide 'glass guards and even discs up front and Type 3 drums at back.I got hold of a set of Maico discs for my king pin stubs in 1973 and fitted a dual circuit master cyl. to my Oval at the same time.We were using 1500 or 1600 motors with hot cams and twin carbs and good exhausts. And we always lowered our cars the same at each end-not having the front dragging on the ground and the arse sitting up high.Good pics Jak.

No worries Jak. Pity I don't have that twin turbo Subaru engine in the back like that French car.

Hey Jak,

That blue bug (after the first silver bug) is running a Hopzafel engine isn't it!! When that bug is on wheels it looks absolutely awesome with the custom made front spoiler and guards, it has a real sleek look to it.

Oasis, was your bug featured in one of the Aussie veedub mag's ages ago? Sensational looking bug!!

Cheers

Yeah, it was in two mags before I owned it, 2 different issues of Australian VW, and each time it had a different owner. I saw it in when I was in my early 20s and though to myself I'd like to own that one day. It was for sale again last year and I bought it (12 years later).
Steve, those cars, especially the last black one are unbelievable.

Damn straight!!! Nothing like going hard. corner - corner, lifting wheels, having the back slide, holding your breath as your brakes are going soft pulling into that 2nd gear turn at the end of a straight. Then looking over to find your passenger with eyes shut, one hand on the door panel and the other on the grab handle :bounce

in regards to the whole skinny tyres, no bumpers thing...
while i love late model german lookers, i think early model GL cars are UGLY....
as i prefer early model beetles, my car will have (hopefully) alot of the callook styling cues... on an irs pan with shocks, bars, wider than stock rubber (15" rims though) etc plus a part or two from the porsche parts bin (hopefully drilled vented discs, 4 pot calipers and a 5 speed + LSD).
T1 motor... T4 bits are a little too expensive for me at the moment

I'm with you Jak, that pic of you lifting your inside tyres is my favourite.

Lets say I'm going for a transitional GL car - a series of contradictions. 4 wheels discs but still swing axle. 17in rims but low back seats. Type IV engine but all chrome trim in place still.

I am never one to conform exactly to current trends or "looks". I like to take elements of each and combine them in a way that works. I must admit I do love the GL for sure.

Alan
