Torsion bar angles/settings
Got a question for the assembled masses (whenever you all assemble).
I am finally starting the reassembly of the bug and have come across two differing notes as to what angle my spring plates should be set at.
I am pretty sure the pan is a '68 semi auto, so I have the IRS rear, and one workshop book says I need to set them (unloaded) at 17.3 degrees,
the other says 21.2 degrees. Now if they were close I'd split it, but thats a huge difference.
Any advice??

I don't reckon many people set them to the "factory spec". I know I would even bother trying. For a start I haven't got the
factory protractor.
Trial and error is the way I do it.
How low / high do you want the rear to sit?
Which torsion bars have you got?
When I set mine, unloaded, they are just below the "stops" and then I lever them up over the "stops" to bolt on the cover plate.
But that gives a lower-than-original stance, but not too low.
Hope that helps in some way.

I have a 1968 VW Service Without Guesswork book - it shows different settings depending on Chassis No, Torsion bar length and diameter.
If you give me your Chassis No, I can give you the setting
