Need idiots guide to replacing cam
Ok, so this is what I need to do:
- remove the flywheel (although the job can be done with flywheel attached but seal might not sit/seal properly)
- split the case
- remove cam and install new one making sure the dot sits between the 2 dots on the crank gear
- bolt case together again
- put main seal back and bolt flywheel
Is the above correct? What if I want to replace the main bearing? Crank has to be dismantled, right? Is it worth taking the crank/rod to a vw shop to
get them balanced while I am at it? This is for a daily driver 1776 with dual IDFs

Is the cam you are putting in brand new or second hand?
It might be an idea to get the lifters refaced while you're at it....
I'd replace the bearings aswell...The crank might need a grind too? (how old is this motor?)
You don't have to take your stuff to a VW shop to get it baanced, just take it too a balancing place.....and make sure you get it all balanced -
crank, rods, pistons and pins, flywheel, clutch, front pulley.
Let the VW shop balance you're carbies instead!

and since you're cracking the case, drop in some new rings, and be careful that the followers match the new cam.

don't forget the Crankshaft oil seal..
And Don't forget to renew the front crankshaft Oil Seal...
I always renew oil seals, EVERY time I disturb them... they are in expensive...
and You wouldn't want Your engine oil all over Your clutch plate now would You!!!
If You dismantle Your Pistons from Your Rods, make sure the arrow on the pistons point to the front of the engine [as the VW manual says] the front of
the engine is the Flywheel side..... this error is made by non VW Mechanics who think the Pulley is at the front of the engine !!!

So where in Melbourne can I get them balanced? What sort of cost? I heard about $150
